As the need for safe hydrogen transportation becomes increasingly critical, Tenaris is actively engaged in Joint Industry Projects (JIPs), research task forces, and regulatory bodies to advance research on hydrogen-compatible materials and contribute to the development of next-generation transportation solutions.
Mihaela Cristea, Senior Product Manager for Hydrogen Technology at Tenaris, was invited to present the company’s insights at the prestigious Hydrogenius Symposium, held on September 12-13 at the Research Center for Hydrogen Industrial Use and Storage, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.
During the session on metallic materials, Cristea discussed the experimental challenges of measuring fracture toughness in hydrogen gas environments, especially for pipeline transportation. This area of research is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of hydrogen through pipelines.
Following the symposium, the Fall meeting of the HyLINE II Joint Industry Project (JIP) took place, organized by Kyushu University in collaboration with SINTEF and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The HyLINE II JIP is a five-year program, building upon the original HyLINE project launched in 2019. It focuses on evaluating the material integrity of welded joints in offshore hydrogen pipelines and assessing their safety. Tenaris, alongside key industry players like Gassco, Equinor, TechnipFMC, TotalEnergies, and Norske Shell, is contributing to this effort.
The HyLINE project aims to convert Norway’s existing 8,800 km subsea pipeline infrastructure to support hydrogen transportation, while also developing new hydrogen networks. With approximately 740,000 welded joints in Norway’s pipeline system, ensuring their structural integrity in hydrogen environments is vital.
“Our goal is to align Tenaris’s research with that of our industrial partners. By participating in this JIP and contributing to the advancement of research on material behavior in hydrogen environments, we are working towards building a European hydrogen transportation network,” said Cristea.
