It is intended to help data center operators and system integrators monitor cooling system performance more effectively while supporting the reliable operation of critical infrastructure.

Addressing Data Center Cooling Challenges

Data centers depend on effective cooling systems to maintain suitable operating temperatures for servers, networking equipment and other essential infrastructure. Hydronic cooling systems circulate chilled water or water-glycol mixtures to remove heat and maintain stable operating conditions. Accurate flow measurement is essential for monitoring these systems, supporting effective control and identifying potential performance issues.

However, data center environments often present installation challenges because equipment rooms and cooling infrastructure can have limited space. Conventional flow measurement installations may require specific lengths of straight piping upstream and downstream of a sensor to achieve the required measurement accuracy. Meeting these requirements can be difficult in compact or complex cooling layouts.

The Rosemount 8795 has been designed to address these challenges by offering measurement capabilities for installations with limited straight-pipe lengths. Its specialized software helps maintain measurement accuracy in situations where conventional installation requirements cannot be met, giving engineers greater flexibility when designing or upgrading cooling systems.

Bob Halgren, vice president of magnetic and vortex flow products within Emerson’s measurement instrumentation business, highlighted the importance of the new solution as data center infrastructure expands.

“As data centers expand to support growing digital infrastructure demands, the Rosemount 8795 applies decades of Emerson flow measurement expertise to help operators improve reliability, simplify deployment, and maximize cooling system performance in mission-critical applications,” Halgren said.

The new sensor extends Emerson’s flow measurement expertise into a specialized application where accuracy, installation flexibility and operational reliability are particularly important.

Specialized Software Enables Short-Run Installations

One of the key features of the Rosemount 8795 is its ability to support accurate flow measurement in installations with limited upstream straight-pipe lengths. The sensor can host Emerson’s proprietary Short Run Installation software, which is designed for situations where space constraints prevent conventional piping arrangements.

When the sensor is paired with compatible Rosemount Magnetic Flow Transmitters, the software is implemented during setup to support the required measurement performance. According to Emerson, the solution can deliver 0.5% accuracy at zero diameters (0D) of straight pipe runs, depending on the upstream flow disturbance and its distance from the electrodes.

This capability is particularly relevant for data centers, where piping layouts may need to accommodate numerous cooling components within restricted spaces. By reducing the dependence on long straight-pipe sections, the technology can provide greater flexibility for engineers and integrators during system design and installation.

Emerson describes this capability as an industry first, noting that competing magnetic flow meters generally require either a specially designed sensor with multiple electrodes or a reduced-bore configuration to provide comparable short-run installation benefits.

The software-based approach is intended to simplify deployment while preserving the flow measurement accuracy needed for reliable cooling system monitoring. It can also help reduce installation complexity in projects where physical space, existing infrastructure or piping configurations limit available options.

High Accuracy for Critical Cooling Loops

For installations with longer upstream and downstream straight-pipe runs of 5D upstream and 2D downstream (5D/2D) or more, the Rosemount 8795 can be paired with compatible Rosemount transmitters to provide flow measurement accuracy of 0.2% ± 2 mm/s.

This level of accuracy supports reliable monitoring and control of critical cooling loops. Accurate flow data helps operators assess whether cooling systems are delivering the required flow rates and supports the management of thermal conditions across data center facilities.

The sensor is designed to provide 0.1% repeatability, helping ensure consistent measurements over time. Reliable and repeatable flow data can be transmitted to building management systems (BMS) and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) platforms, where it can contribute to operational monitoring and performance calculations.

The resulting data can support calculations related to water usage effectiveness (WUE), carbon usage effectiveness (CUE) and power usage effectiveness (PUE). These indicators are used by data center operators to evaluate aspects of water consumption, carbon impact and energy efficiency.

By providing consistent flow measurements, the Rosemount 8795 can help operators obtain dependable information about cooling system performance and make better-informed decisions about system control and resource management.

Designed for Chilled Water and Water-Glycol Applications

The Rosemount 8795 has been optimized for chilled water and water-glycol cooling loops commonly used in data center thermal management systems. It supports common data center piping sizes ranging from 2 to 18 inches, allowing the sensor to serve a range of hydronic cooling applications.

Its construction includes a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) liner and stainless-steel electrodes selected for these thermal management applications. These components are intended to provide dependable performance in primary cooling loops and closed-loop cooling systems.

The sensor also features a design without moving parts. This configuration supports measurement reliability and eliminates the need to maintain mechanical moving components within the flow measurement device.

The combination of application-specific materials, repeatable measurement performance and industrial-grade construction is intended to help data center operators maintain reliable cooling operations. By providing accurate information about flow conditions, the sensor can support system monitoring and control while helping operators maintain confidence in their cooling infrastructure.

Flexible Connectivity and Simplified Installation

The device also supports universal AC or DC power, giving installers flexibility when integrating it into different electrical configurations. Compatible Rosemount transmitters can be mounted integrally or remotely, allowing the installation arrangement to be adapted to the needs of individual projects.

The Short Run Installation software further expands the sensor’s installation flexibility by addressing situations where sufficient straight-pipe lengths are unavailable.

Together, these features are intended to simplify equipment specification and standardize flow measurement across a data center site. Instead of relying on different solutions for different hydronic installation conditions, operators and system integrators can use a common sensor platform across a wider range of cooling applications.

Built-In Diagnostics Support Commissioning and Reliability

Commissioning is an important stage in data center development because cooling systems must be configured and verified before they support critical computing operations. Problems identified during commissioning can cause delays, require additional work and increase project costs.

The Rosemount 8795 works with compatible Rosemount transmitters that provide built-in diagnostics and verification capabilities. These functions are designed to help data center operators and integrators reduce commissioning risk and maintain confidence in ongoing system performance.

Access to reliable measurement information and diagnostic capabilities can help technical teams verify installation performance and support the continued monitoring of cooling systems after commissioning.
