Cheerios and Ziploc Introduce PantrySeal Packaging to Make Cereal Pouring and Resealing Easier
Cheerios™ and Ziploc® Brand have joined forces to address a familiar household frustration by introducing Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal™, a new cereal packaging innovation designed to make pouring, resealing and storing cereal easier. Developed in response to hundreds of thousands of consumer requests, comments and reactions received annually about cereal packaging, the new product introduces the first resealable bag inside a traditional cereal box.
The innovation combines the familiar cereal experience consumers know from Cheerios with the resealable freshness expertise of Ziploc Brand. By integrating a convenient resealing mechanism directly into the cereal package, the companies aim to simplify an everyday kitchen routine and help families keep their cereal fresher for longer.
Cheerios, recognized as the No. 1 cereal brand, has partnered with Ziploc Brand, which brings more than 50 years of experience helping consumers seal in freshness and store the foods they love. The collaboration responds to a common challenge for cereal consumers: keeping cereal fresh after opening the box while making it easy to pour the next serving.
Consumer habits helped demonstrate the need for a new approach. According to the companies, 90% of cereal consumers already take additional steps beyond simply closing the cereal box to help preserve freshness. These measures include folding the cereal bag, rolling it closed, using clips or transferring cereal into separate storage containers. Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is designed to reduce the need for these extra steps by incorporating resealable functionality directly into the original packaging.
“General Mills has received letters, emails and DMs asking for an easier way to reseal a cereal box, and we decided it was time to partner with the ultimate freshness brand: Ziploc®,” said Emilie Knox, Vice President and Business Unit Director for Cheerios at General Mills. “Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal™ takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable.”
A More Convenient Way to Pour Cereal
Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal has been designed around how people serve and store cereal at home. Rather than requiring consumers to remove the entire bag from the box or struggle with a loosely folded opening, the new packaging allows the bag to open partially across the top, creating a convenient pouring spout.
This design helps make it easier to pour cereal directly into a bowl while also accommodating different serving preferences. Consumers can use the opening to fill a bowl, cup or mug, while the controlled pouring design is intended to make the process more convenient for the whole family, including younger cereal eaters.
Once the desired portion has been poured, the bag can be resealed inside the cereal box. The integrated closure provides a straightforward way to close the package between servings, helping consumers avoid the need for separate clips or other improvised storage solutions.
The concept focuses on improving a familiar daily activity without changing the cereal itself. Consumers can continue enjoying the Cheerios products they know while benefiting from packaging designed to make opening, pouring and storing easier.
For households that regularly consume cereal, packaging can play an important role in convenience. A cereal bag that is difficult to close may encourage consumers to fold or roll the opening, while transferring cereal to another container adds another task to the kitchen routine. By integrating resealable functionality into the original bag, Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal seeks to make the process more intuitive and reduce these additional steps.
Bringing Ziploc Freshness Expertise Into the Cereal Aisle
The partnership brings together two established consumer brands with complementary strengths. Cheerios contributes its position in the cereal category and its connection with families, while Ziploc Brand contributes decades of experience in resealable storage and freshness solutions.
Ziploc Brand has developed products intended to help consumers store food and other household items conveniently. Its history of resealable storage innovation dates back to 1968, when the brand introduced its innovative zipper technology. The new Cheerios collaboration extends that expertise into a different product category by incorporating resealable functionality into cereal packaging itself.
“For generations, Ziploc® Brand has helped people keep the foods they love fresh through simple, trusted solutions,” said a Ziploc Brand spokesperson. “Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal™ is an exciting new expression of what Ziploc® Brand can do – bringing our resealable freshness expertise directly into the Cheerios package and Ziploc® Brand into the pantry in an entirely new way.”
The partnership demonstrates how packaging innovation can address practical consumer needs without requiring a fundamental change to the product inside. Instead of introducing a new cereal formula or altering the traditional breakfast experience, the companies have focused on improving how consumers interact with the package throughout its use.
The collaboration also reflects the value of consumer feedback in product development. Repeated requests for a simpler way to close cereal bags helped identify an opportunity for Cheerios and Ziploc Brand to combine their capabilities and develop a solution aimed at an everyday household problem.
Familiar Cheerios Products With a New Packaging Option
Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is being introduced as a new option for two familiar products: original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. Both varieties retain the cereal experience consumers already recognize, with the packaging providing the principal innovation.
For families who regularly purchase these cereals, the new format offers another option in the cereal aisle. The resealable bag is intended to make it easier to access the product, pour a serving and close the package afterward, bringing the convenience of resealable storage directly into the cereal box.
The launch does not require consumers to adopt a different way of eating cereal. Instead, it aims to make the existing routine easier by addressing a step that often occurs after the cereal has been poured: closing the package properly before storing it again.
The availability of the PantrySeal format across Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios also gives consumers a choice between familiar cereal varieties while benefiting from the same packaging concept.
Developing Packaging for Cheerios Production at Scale
Although the idea addresses a straightforward consumer problem, bringing the new packaging to market required considerable development. The companies needed to create a resealable cereal bag that could operate within Cheerios’ established production system while maintaining the product’s familiar characteristics and supporting production at a significant scale.
According to the announcement, nearly one box of Cheerios is produced every second. That production volume presented an important consideration for the new packaging design. The PantrySeal system needed to work within large-scale manufacturing operations while allowing Cheerios to continue supplying the cereal consumers expect.
The development process therefore involved more than simply adding a resealable feature to an existing bag. The packaging needed to support the pouring experience, close securely after use and fit within the manufacturing and distribution processes required to supply households nationwide.
The project illustrates how relatively small consumer-facing improvements can require coordination across product development, packaging engineering and manufacturing. A feature that appears simple when used in a kitchen must also function consistently during high-volume production and throughout the supply chain.
The collaboration combines Cheerios’ manufacturing capabilities with Ziploc Brand’s resealable packaging expertise to bring the concept into a widely recognized cereal format.
A Full-Circle Connection to Buffalo, New York
The new product also has a connection to the history of Cheerios. Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is being produced exclusively in Buffalo, New York, the same location where Cheerios was first made in 1941.
This connection links the new packaging innovation with the cereal brand’s manufacturing heritage. More than eight decades after Cheerios was first produced in Buffalo, the location is once again central to an initiative intended to improve the consumer experience.
Producing the new format at scale while retaining the familiar cereal inside the box represents an important part of the launch. The companies are introducing a new way to store and pour Cheerios without changing the product’s established place in consumers’ pantries.
Availability and Nationwide Retail Expansion
Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is initially available exclusively through Walmart.com. The companies plan to expand distribution to retailers nationwide in the coming months, providing additional opportunities for consumers to purchase the new packaging format.
The initial online availability gives shoppers a way to access the new product as the companies prepare for a broader retail rollout. The expansion is expected to bring the packaging innovation to more consumers through established retail channels.
By combining the familiar taste of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios with the resealable expertise of Ziploc Brand, the new product aims to simplify an everyday breakfast routine. Its central feature is a practical improvement: a cereal bag that opens to support easier pouring and closes again inside the original box.
Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal reflects the companies’ effort to translate consumer feedback into a packaging solution that fits naturally into household routines. By addressing the repeated challenge of keeping an opened cereal bag closed, the partnership brings resealable freshness technology into the cereal aisle and offers families a more convenient way to pour, store and enjoy their favorite cereal.
