Armstrong World Industries Announces Third-Quarter 2026 Financial Results

Armstrong World Industries Reports Strong Third-Quarter 2026 Results With Double-Digit Sales and Adjusted EBITDA Growth

Armstrong World Industries, a leading manufacturer of innovative architectural applications for interior and exterior spaces across the Americas, has reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2026, highlighting double-digit growth in net sales and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). The company attributed its performance to strong demand for Architectural Specialties solutions, favorable average unit value (AUV), higher sales volumes and the continued execution of its growth initiatives.

Armstrong World Industries designs and manufactures a broad portfolio of architectural products, including ceilings, specialty walls and exterior metal solutions. Its latest quarterly performance reflects continued demand across key product categories, supported by pricing improvements, organic sales growth and contributions from recent acquisitions. Despite rising manufacturing expenses, inflationary pressures and tariff-related costs, the company delivered higher operating income and adjusted EBITDA growth while expanding adjusted EBITDA margins in both of its operating segments.

Mark Hershey, president and chief executive officer of Armstrong World Industries, said demand for the company’s Architectural Specialties portfolio remained strong during the quarter, while Mineral Fiber products benefited from solid AUV and volume performance.

Hershey noted that the company achieved another quarter of record top-line results under relatively stable end-market conditions. He emphasized that its growth initiatives continued to support profitable growth ahead of the broader market.

He also highlighted the challenges associated with rapidly rising inflationary pressures and timing-related product mix headwinds affecting Mineral Fiber sales. Despite these factors, the company’s teams delivered double-digit adjusted EBITDA growth and margin expansion across both operating segments. Armstrong World Industries also continued responding to increasing costs while maintaining its focus on its updated full-year 2026 outlook and long-term growth opportunities.

Consolidated Financial Performance Shows Strong Growth

Armstrong World Industries reported an 11.9% increase in consolidated net sales in the third quarter of 2026 compared with the corresponding period in 2025. The improvement was supported by $35 million in higher sales volumes and $16 million from favorable average unit value.

Both major operating segments contributed to the increase. Architectural Specialties net sales rose by $33 million, while Mineral Fiber net sales increased by $18 million compared with the prior-year quarter.

Architectural Specialties benefited from $25 million in higher organic net sales and an additional $8 million contribution from acquisitions. The organic improvement reflected strong growth across most specialty product categories, while the inorganic contribution represented sales associated with acquired businesses.

Mineral Fiber’s performance was driven by favorable AUV and higher sales volumes. Improvements in pricing and product mix helped increase the average value generated from sales, while additional demand contributed to the segment’s revenue growth.

Consolidated operating income also increased 11.9% compared with the third quarter of 2025. The improvement reflected stronger sales performance and higher profitability contributions from several areas of the business.

Higher sales volumes generated a $13 million margin benefit, while favorable AUV contributed another $9 million. In addition, equity earnings from the Worthington Armstrong Joint Venture (WAVE) increased by $4 million.

These positive factors were partially offset by a $10 million increase in manufacturing costs. Higher freight expenses and raw material prices were the primary drivers of the increase, reflecting the impact of input cost inflation. The company also experienced additional costs associated with its 2026 and 2025 acquisitions.

Operating and adjusted EBITDA margins remained under pressure from rising input costs, tariffs and unfavorable product mix within the Mineral Fiber segment. Nevertheless, improved sales volumes, pricing benefits and growth in Architectural Specialties supported the company’s overall financial performance.

Mineral Fiber Segment Benefits From Pricing and Volume Improvements

Mineral Fiber continued to contribute to Armstrong World Industries’ quarterly growth, with net sales increasing $18 million compared with the third quarter of 2025.

The increase comprised $16 million in favorable average unit value and $2 million from higher sales volumes. Improved like-for-like pricing was the primary driver of the AUV increase, with favorable product mix also contributing to the improvement.

Higher sales volumes were supported primarily by timing-related demand from Canadian customers. The company also benefited from its growth initiatives, which contributed to sales activity during the quarter.

Mineral Fiber operating income increased 7.4% year over year. Several factors supported the improvement, including a $9 million margin benefit from favorable AUV, a $4 million increase in WAVE equity earnings and a $3 million reduction in selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses.

The lower SG&A expenses were primarily attributable to higher incentive compensation costs recorded in the prior-year period. This comparison helped improve the segment’s operating income in the third quarter of 2026.

However, the benefits were partially offset by an $8 million increase in manufacturing costs, largely driven by higher freight and raw material expenses. These inflationary pressures continued to affect the segment’s cost structure and profitability.

The results demonstrate the importance of pricing discipline and operational efficiency as manufacturers manage changing input costs. Although higher AUV supported Mineral Fiber earnings, the company continued to face challenges associated with production expenses and sales mix.

Armstrong World Industries’ focus on growth initiatives, pricing execution and cost mitigation remains important to sustaining profitability as market conditions evolve.

Architectural Specialties Delivers Strong Operating Income Growth

The Architectural Specialties segment recorded one of the strongest contributions to Armstrong World Industries’ third-quarter performance.

Net sales increased $33 million compared with the prior-year period. The improvement included $25 million in organic net sales growth and an $8 million contribution from acquisitions.

Organic growth was driven by strong demand across most of the segment’s specialty product categories. The results indicate continued customer demand for architectural solutions used in commercial and other building environments.

Operating income for Architectural Specialties increased 33.7% year over year. Higher organic sales generated a $9 million margin benefit, supporting the segment’s profitability improvement.

The segment’s performance was particularly notable because it occurred despite elevated metal costs. These expenses negatively affected project margins, partially reducing the profitability benefit associated with higher organic sales.

The company also reported a $2 million negative inorganic impact, primarily resulting from SG&A expenses associated with acquired operations.

Despite these pressures, Architectural Specialties delivered substantial operating income growth, demonstrating the contribution of its specialty product portfolio and organic expansion initiatives to consolidated results.

The segment remains an important component of Armstrong World Industries’ strategy to expand its architectural solutions business and generate profitable growth. Continued demand for specialty products, combined with contributions from acquisitions, supported its performance during the quarter.

Corporate Costs Remain Stable

Armstrong World Industries reported an unallocated corporate operating loss of $1 million in the third quarter of 2026, unchanged from the same period in 2025.

The stable result indicates that unallocated corporate expenses remained broadly consistent year over year, while the company’s two operating segments delivered improvements in sales and operating income.

The segment-level performance and stable corporate operating loss contributed to the overall increase in consolidated operating income during the reporting period.

Operating Cash Flow and Investing Activities

Armstrong World Industries also reported changes in its cash flow performance during the first nine months of 2026.

Year-to-date cash flows from operating activities decreased by $23 million, or 10%, compared with the corresponding period in 2025.

The decline was primarily attributable to unfavorable timing-related changes in receivables and higher income tax payments. These factors reduced the cash generated from operations during the period.

Partially offsetting the decline were favorable timing-related changes in accounts payable and accrued expenses, along with an increase in net earnings.

The operating cash flow performance highlights the distinction between accounting earnings and cash generation. Although the company reported higher quarterly sales and operating income, working capital movements and tax payments affected the amount of cash generated during the year.

Cash used for investing activities increased by $52 million compared with the prior-year period. The primary reason was cash paid for the acquisition of Eventscape. This increase was partially offset by higher dividends received from WAVE.

The acquisition-related spending reflects the company’s continued investment in its business portfolio, while the additional joint venture dividends provided a partial offset to investment-related cash outflows.

Share Repurchase Program Returns Capital to Shareholders

Armstrong World Industries continued its capital allocation program during the third quarter of 2026 by repurchasing 0.4 million shares of common stock.

The company spent approximately $75 million on the repurchases, excluding commissions and taxes, at an average price of $174.36 per share.

As of September 30, 2026, approximately $1.1 billion remained available under the company’s authorized share repurchase program.

The program was initially approved by the company’s board of directors in July 2016 and has since received additional authorizations and extensions. Under the current authorization, Armstrong World Industries may repurchase up to $2.5 billion of its outstanding common stock through December 2029.

Since the program began and through September 30, 2026, the company had repurchased 16.6 million shares for a total cost of approximately $1.4 billion, excluding commissions and taxes. The average purchase price across those repurchases was $82.74 per share.

Share repurchases form part of the company’s broader capital allocation strategy, which aims to balance investment in business growth with the return of capital to shareholders.

Updated 2026 Outlook Reflects Growth and Cost Pressures

Armstrong World Industries has updated its full-year 2026 outlook to reflect its operating performance, changing cost conditions and expectations for the remainder of the year.

Chris Calzaretta, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Armstrong World Industries, said the company delivered double-digit growth in both consolidated net sales and adjusted EBITDA during the third quarter. He also highlighted adjusted EBITDA margin expansion in both operating segments despite continued input cost inflation and tariff pressures.

According to Calzaretta, the updated outlook incorporates an increase in organic Architectural Specialties net sales, the impact of accelerating costs across both segments after mitigation efforts, unfavorable Mineral Fiber product mix and softer contributions from recent acquisitions.

The company’s response to these pressures includes continued attention to operational efficiency and cost mitigation. Its performance also reflects the contribution of organic growth initiatives and its focus on disciplined capital allocation.

Calzaretta said the company expects strong full-year growth across its key performance metrics, supported by its resilient business model and operational priorities.

The updated outlook underscores the balance Armstrong World Industries must maintain between pursuing growth and managing cost inflation. Higher freight and raw material prices, tariff-related expenses and changes in product mix remain important factors affecting margins.

Focus on Sustainable Growth and Operational Efficiency

Armstrong World Industries’ third-quarter 2026 results demonstrate the contribution of its Architectural Specialties and Mineral Fiber businesses to consolidated growth. Higher sales volumes, favorable AUV and strong specialty product demand helped the company achieve an 11.9% increase in net sales and an equivalent increase in operating income.

Architectural Specialties delivered particularly strong operating income growth, while Mineral Fiber benefited from improved pricing and higher demand. At the same time, the company continued to manage inflationary pressures, acquisition-related costs and changes in cash flow.

The company’s share repurchases and investments in acquired businesses also illustrate its approach to balancing shareholder returns with portfolio expansion.

Looking ahead, Armstrong World Industries remains focused on executing its updated 2026 outlook, advancing its growth initiatives and improving operational efficiency. Its ability to maintain pricing discipline, mitigate rising costs and sustain demand across its architectural product categories will remain important to delivering profitable growth and creating long-term shareholder value.
