As the smart-home industry continues to expand, manufacturers are increasingly adopting the Matter connectivity standard to improve interoperability among products from different brands and smart-home ecosystems. However, ensuring that every device can be securely authenticated during setup and communication remains an important requirement. ST MatterConnect addresses this challenge by enabling device makers to integrate the necessary certificates, cryptographic keys, and personalization data into supported secure semiconductor components through STMicroelectronics’ established security infrastructure.

ST MatterConnect Streamlines Secure Credential Provisioning

The ST MatterConnect service provides a convenient, ready-to-use approach for securely provisioning authentication credentials into two ST semiconductor products: the ST25DA-C near-field communication (NFC) tag and the STSAFE-A120 secure element. These components support security functions required by Matter-compatible devices and help manufacturers establish trusted connections between connected products and their respective smart-home ecosystems.

Through the service, STMicroelectronics can generate and inject credentials directly into the chips using its in-house capabilities and certified secure manufacturing facilities. This approach helps customers avoid the need to establish and maintain their own specialized credential-provisioning infrastructure.

The provisioning process includes the mandatory Matter Device Attestation Certificate (DAC), which helps establish the authenticity of a device during the Matter commissioning process. Additional information can also be provisioned, including cryptographic keys, product and software-version information, and customer-specific personalization data.

By preparing secure chips with the required credentials before they are integrated into finished products, ST MatterConnect can simplify manufacturing workflows and reduce the number of security-related operations that device makers must manage internally.

This service is particularly relevant for companies producing smart lighting equipment, connected household accessories, security systems, sensors, and other Internet of Things (IoT) products that must meet Matter authentication requirements.

Reducing Manufacturing Complexity and Time to Market

Secure credential provisioning can introduce significant operational challenges for manufacturers developing connected products. Companies must manage cryptographic material, protect sensitive information, maintain secure production processes, and ensure that their products comply with applicable certification and authentication requirements.

Building this infrastructure internally can require substantial investment in security technology, specialized expertise, operational procedures, and ongoing maintenance. These requirements can increase development costs and extend product launch schedules, particularly for manufacturers introducing new Matter-compatible product lines.

ST MatterConnect is designed to address these challenges by offering a turnkey service that integrates credential generation and secure injection into STMicroelectronics’ existing security capabilities. Manufacturers can receive Matter-ready secure chips with essential certificates and keys already loaded, helping simplify downstream production and product integration.

According to Sylvain Fidelis, Multi-Market Business Line Manager at STMicroelectronics, the service enables customers to reduce operational costs and complexity while accelerating time to market for new products. He also highlighted the value of ST’s status as an approved Product Attestation Authority (PAA) and Product Attestation Intermediate (PAI), which allows manufacturers to leverage ST’s established trust infrastructure instead of developing equivalent capabilities independently.

The service can therefore help manufacturers focus more resources on product design, software development, user experience, and market expansion while relying on ST to support critical credential-provisioning activities.

ST25DA-C Supports Matter NFC Commissioning

One of the semiconductor components supported by the service is the ST25DA-C NFC tag, which is designed to support the NFC commissioning flow for Matter devices.

Commissioning is the process through which a user securely adds a compatible device to a smart-home network. Making this process straightforward is essential to improving the adoption of connected devices, especially as consumers increasingly expect products to work seamlessly across different brands and platforms.

NFC technology enables short-range wireless communication between compatible devices. In a Matter smart-home environment, NFC-based commissioning can help users initiate device setup through a simplified interaction, reducing the complexity associated with connecting new equipment.

Potential applications include smart lightbulbs, smart plugs, smoke alarms, security cameras, presence sensors, and other connected household products. These devices can participate in compatible smart-home ecosystems without requiring users to depend on multiple proprietary hubs for different brands of equipment, provided the products and ecosystem controllers support the relevant Matter features.

The ST25DA-C supports this use case by providing a suitable component for the device’s NFC commissioning functionality. When combined with secure credential provisioning, it can help manufacturers deliver products that are prepared for a more streamlined setup experience.

This approach also supports the broader objective of Matter: improving interoperability among connected devices and reducing fragmentation across smart-home platforms.

STSAFE-A120 Strengthens IoT Device Security

The second supported component, the STSAFE-A120, is a secure element designed to provide authentication and security services for Matter-compatible products and other IoT applications.

The component connects to the device’s host processor through an Inter-Integrated Circuit (I²C) interface. It provides a dedicated environment for handling sensitive security information and executing authentication-related operations, helping protect cryptographic keys and other important credentials from unauthorized access.

The STSAFE-A120 supports security functions such as secure connection establishment and integrity verification. These capabilities help devices establish trusted communications and verify that relevant information has not been improperly modified.

The secure element executes an optimized set of commands that support device authentication using tamper-resistant hardware. By keeping sensitive security operations within a dedicated component, manufacturers can reduce their reliance on software-only mechanisms for protecting critical credentials.

STMicroelectronics also highlights that the STSAFE-A120 runs on a Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 5+ (CC EAL5+)-certified platform. This certification level indicates that the underlying platform has undergone a defined security evaluation process. It provides an additional assurance foundation for applications that require strong protection of sensitive information.

For manufacturers developing connected products, incorporating a dedicated secure element can help strengthen the device’s security architecture while supporting the authentication requirements of modern IoT ecosystems.

Supporting Matter Interoperability Across Smart Homes

Matter is an industry-developed connectivity standard intended to improve interoperability among smart-home devices and platforms. By supporting a common framework for compatible products, Matter helps consumers connect and manage devices from different manufacturers with fewer compatibility barriers.

Authentication is a central part of this framework because smart-home ecosystems need mechanisms to distinguish legitimate devices from unauthorized or potentially malicious products. Device attestation credentials help establish trust during the commissioning process, while cryptographic keys support secure communication and other security operations.

ST MatterConnect addresses the manufacturing side of this requirement by helping ensure that the necessary credentials are available in supported secure chips before products enter service. Combining this provisioning capability with the ST25DA-C and STSAFE-A120 gives device manufacturers options for implementing NFC-based commissioning support and dedicated hardware security functions.

These capabilities are relevant to a wide range of applications, including connected lighting, home safety systems, security equipment, environmental sensing, and other IoT products.

Strengthening STMicroelectronics’ Smart-Home Security Offering

The introduction of ST MatterConnect expands STMicroelectronics’ offering for manufacturers developing secure, interoperable smart-home products. By combining secure semiconductor components with credential generation, provisioning expertise, and established trust infrastructure, the company aims to simplify an important stage of the connected-device manufacturing process.

For customers, the service offers a way to reduce the burden of managing sensitive credentials and building secure provisioning systems from the ground up.
