As part of the restructuring of the capital of Plastic Energy, partner (35%) of TotalEnergies (65%) (Paris:TTE) (LSE:TTE) (NYSE:TTE) in the Grandpuits chemical recycling plant, TotalEnergies has agreed to buy back from the new shareholder Plastic Energy’s stake in this plant, which is now 100% owned by TotalEnergies.
The Grandpuits chemical recycling plant (Seine-et-Marne) started in March 2026 and has a capacity of 15,000 tonnes per year of plastic waste processing.
A pioneering factory for the French chemical recycling of plastics
The Grandpuits plant transforms French plastic waste, primarily from the “yellow bin” (recycling bin), which is difficult to recycle and currently either landfilled or incinerated, into synthetic oil using a pyrolysis process. This process involves heating the waste to a high temperature in the absence of oxygen. It allows for the treatment of waste that is not mechanically recyclable and the production of a circular raw material for the petrochemical industry, replacing fossil fuels.
The synthetic oil produced enables the manufacture of recycled plastics of equivalent quality to virgin plastics, compatible with the most stringent uses, particularly in the food and medical sectors. In 2023, TotalEnergies signed an agreement with two French partners, Citeo and Paprec, to secure the unit’s long-term supply of plastic waste.
