Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) has recently entered into a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Matrix Renewables, an energy development company headquartered in Madrid, Spain. This agreement is set to benefit the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) located in Georgia, as well as other manufacturing facilities across the United States.
Under this agreement, the Group will procure 147 MW of generation capacity from Matrix Renewables’ Stillhouse Solar Project in Bell County, Texas. The total generation capacity of this project is expected to reach 210 MW. Through this venture, the Group aims to secure approximately 378 GWh of electricity annually and looks forward to a yearly reduction of 140,000 tons of carbon emissions. This initiative underscores the Group’s steadfast commitment to integrating renewable energy into its global manufacturing operations.
The acquired solar energy will play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable manufacturing practices across several Group-affiliated plants in the U.S., including HMGMA, a factory specializing in electric vehicles (EVs), as well as other facilities involved in supplying parts, steel plates, and sheets for the Group’s EV lineup.
Various affiliates of the Group, including HMGMA, Hyundai Mobis North America Electrified Powertrain LLC, Hyundai Steel Georgia Inc., and Hyundai Transys Georgia Powertrain Inc., have collectively participated in this agreement. Their collaboration reinforces a sustainable supply chain powered by renewable energy, from the production of parts to the assembly of vehicles.
This PPA marks the beginning of a series of investments and contracts for renewable energy conversion at the Group’s U.S. facilities throughout the current year. Furthermore, the Group envisions extending its transition to renewable energy across its manufacturing sites worldwide through collaborative efforts with diverse stakeholders.
HMGMA stands as Hyundai Motor Group’s inaugural dedicated EV mass-production plant in Bryan County, Georgia. Set to commence operations in the fourth quarter of this year, the factory will commence the production of EVs for Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation, among other automotive affiliates.
