Boeing, listed on NYSE as BA, has initiated its largest purchase of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) totaling 9.4 million gallons (35.6 million liters) to bolster its U.S. commercial operations for 2024. This strategic move underscores Boeing’s commitment to curbing carbon emissions and contributing to the expansion of sustainable fuel availability worldwide. This procurement marks a significant increase compared to its 2023 purchase, surpassing it by over 60%.
The acquired blended fuel, comprising 30% SAF derived from waste by-products like fats, oils, and greases, alongside 70% conventional jet fuel, will be instrumental in supporting Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program and its U.S. commercial flights. Ryan Faucett, Boeing’s vice president of environmental sustainability, emphasized the company’s unwavering focus on safety, quality, and sustainability. He underscored the pivotal role of sustainable aviation fuel in the decarbonization of aviation, with approximately 20% of Boeing’s fuel usage already being a SAF blend. Boeing is actively ramping up its utilization of SAF to stimulate growth in the industry and striving to enhance its accessibility and affordability for commercial airline clients through collaborative efforts, investments, research, and policy advocacy.
Unblended SAF, also known as “neat” SAF, holds the potential to slash carbon emissions by up to 85% throughout its life cycle, presenting the commercial aviation sector with a promising avenue to significantly mitigate its climate impact over the next three decades.
Boeing will receive 4 million gallons of the blended SAF directly into its fuel farms located in the Pacific Northwest. EPIC Fuels, a subsidiary of Signature Aviation, will supply 2.5 million gallons sourced from Neste, while Avfuel will contribute 1.5 million gallons of blended SAF sourced from the same provider.
Furthermore, Boeing will procure the carbon emissions reduction equivalent to 5.4 million gallons of blended SAF through a process known as book-and-claim. This involves the purchase of SAF certificates to displace conventional jet fuel. Instead of directing the fuel into Boeing’s fuel farms, distributors will deliver it to nearby airports for utilization by airlines and other carriers.
Boeing’s book-and-claim transactions will see EPIC Fuels supplying 3.5 million gallons of blended SAF from Neste, and World Fuel Services, a subsidiary of World Kinect, providing 1.9 million gallons sourced from World Energy.
