Hyundai Leads 2024 IIHS Awards with Most TSP & TSP+ Titles

Hyundai Motor Group has achieved a significant milestone, with 22 models from Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, and Genesis being recognized with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) and TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) awards. This achievement underscores the Group’s unwavering commitment to safety and innovation.

Hyundai Motor Group’s total awards surpass those of any other automaker in the annual IIHS assessment, accounting for 21 percent of all 2024 TSP and TSP+ honors. Among individual brands, Hyundai ranked second, while Genesis secured third place in a tie with Honda and Mazda. These accolades highlight the Group’s dedication to providing top-tier safety standards across its vehicle lineup.

The Group’s exceptional performance in the IIHS 2024 Top Safety awards is a testament to our unwavering focus on safety and continuous efforts to provide the highest level of protection for vehicle occupants and other road users, said Brian Latouf, President and Global Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Hyundai Motor Group. The results also reflect our strategy to maintain safety leadership for 2025 and years to come.

Breaking down the awards by brand, Hyundai Motor secured nine awards, with four TSP+ and five TSP honors. Genesis earned eight awards, including seven TSP+ and one TSP, while Kia received five awards, comprising one TSP+ and four TSP honors. These accolades underscore the advanced safety features and engineering excellence integrated into Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles. All recognized vehicles are from the 2024 model year unless otherwise noted.

Hyundai Motor Highlights:

For Hyundai, the TSP+ winners are the IONIQ 5, KONA, and TUCSON (models built after March 2024) small SUVs, as well as the IONIQ 6 midsize electric car. The TSP winners include the ELANTRA small car, SONATA midsize car, PALISADE and SANTA FE midsize SUVs, and SANTA CRUZ small pickup truck. These vehicles reflect Hyundai’s commitment to integrating advanced safety technologies and robust structural designs.

Genesis Highlights:

Genesis earned recognition with seven TSP+ awards for the G80 (models built after October 2023), Electrified G80, and G90 (models built after October 2023) large luxury cars, the GV60 small SUV, and the GV70 (2025MY) (models built after April 2024), Electrified GV70 (models built after April 2024), and GV80 (models built after August 2023) midsize luxury SUVs. Additionally, the GV70 (models built after November 2023) midsize luxury SUV received a TSP award. These honors highlight Genesis’ emphasis on luxury combined with state-of-the-art safety features.

Kia Highlights:

Kia’s TSP+ winner is the TELLURIDE midsize SUV. TSP awards were earned by the K4 small car, SPORTAGE small SUV, and the EV9 (models built after January 2024) and SORENTO (2024-25MY) midsize SUVs. These vehicles showcase Kia’s dedication to offering accessible safety innovations across its lineup.

Rigorous Testing and Criteria:

To earn an IIHS TSP award, vehicles must achieve a Good rating in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. For the more stringent TSP+ award, vehicles must secure Good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, along with at least an Acceptable rating in the updated moderate front crash test. Both TSP and TSP+ winners must also feature Acceptable or Good ratings for pedestrian front crash prevention and headlights equipped across all trim levels.

The IIHS has raised its standards for the 2024 awards, focusing on enhancing rear-seat passenger protection and pedestrian crash avoidance systems. A key update includes the revised moderate front overlap test, which now incorporates a second dummy positioned behind the driver to evaluate rear-seat safety. This change emphasizes the importance of rear-seat occupant protection and replaces the original evaluation in the TSP+ criteria.

Hyundai Motor Group’s outstanding performance in the 2024 IIHS awards showcases its leadership in vehicle safety. By continuing to prioritize innovation and protection, the Group sets a high benchmark for the automotive industry, ensuring the safety of its customers and other road users alike.
