The high number of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities in traffic accidents remains a critical global issue. With the rise of e-bikes and other similar vehicles, ensuring the safety of vulnerable road users has become a major focus in efforts to reduce traffic accidents.
To address this, Sumitomo Electric is set to launch the NEXUSEYE™ in October 2024. This advanced millimeter-wave sensor uses radar technology to detect a wide area in front of vehicles, even in challenging weather conditions and at night.
The NEXUSEYE™ sensor combines radar with a nadir-facing camera and Sumitomo Electric’s proprietary AI image processing technology. This system effectively detects and identifies road-crossers, including those in driver blind spots, from the moment they approach the road, contributing to safer road crossings.
Key Features of the Crosser Detection Sensor:
- Pedestrian Detection: The sensor’s nadir-facing camera addresses the limitations of millimeter-wave radar by detecting pedestrians in blind spots directly below the sensor and up to five meters behind.
- Crosser Identification: Using AI-powered image processing, the sensor identifies various road users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, wheelchair users, and individuals with white canes, with an accuracy rate exceeding 95%.
The NEXUSEYE™ is a high-precision millimeter-wave sensor capable of detecting pedestrians up to 60 meters away with nearly 100% accuracy, even in adverse conditions such as rain and nighttime. Both the NEXUSEYE™ and its logo are trademarks of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
How the Crosser Detection Sensor Works:
- Detects and identifies individuals approaching from the sidewalk.
- Notifies automobile drivers of detected crossers through signals, signs, LEDs, and other communication methods, based on the sensor’s data.
