Suzuki’s Edge-eCoat Anodizing Technology Wins Best Sustainable Product Award at Cannes Yachting Festival 2026

Suzuki Motor Corporation has received the Best Sustainable Product Award in the Innovation Route Award category at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 for its innovative “Edge-eCoat” anodizing treatment technology developed for outboard motors. The prestigious award ceremony took place during the international yachting event held in France in September 2026. The recognition marks the first time Suzuki has received this award and highlights the company’s efforts to combine advanced manufacturing technology, product durability, and environmental sustainability.

The Innovation Route Award recognizes products and technologies that offer practical solutions while reducing environmental impact through innovation. Suzuki’s Edge-eCoat technology was selected for its ability to improve the corrosion resistance of outboard motor engine components while significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions during manufacturing. The achievement demonstrates how advances in industrial surface treatment can contribute to more sustainable production processes without compromising product performance.

Edge-eCoat Introduces Innovative Surface Treatment for Outboard Motors

Developed by Suzuki, Edge-eCoat is described by the company as the world’s first surface treatment technology to apply an anodizing process to engine components used in mass-produced outboard motors. The technology represents an important manufacturing development for marine propulsion systems, where components must withstand continuous exposure to challenging operating conditions.

Outboard motors operate in marine environments and typically draw seawater into the engine to help regulate operating temperatures. Because seawater can accelerate corrosion, the internal passages through which cooling water flows require effective protective treatment. Maintaining corrosion resistance is essential for supporting engine durability and reliable operation over time.

Traditional manufacturing methods use protective treatments, including painting processes, to improve the corrosion resistance of engine components. Suzuki developed Edge-eCoat as an alternative approach that applies a uniform anodizing process to the engine parts through which cooling water passes. This treatment provides high resistance to seawater corrosion while offering an additional environmental advantage during production.

By applying anodizing technology to components manufactured on a mass-production basis, Suzuki has addressed a technical challenge in marine engine manufacturing. The development brings a surface treatment commonly associated with metal finishing into an application requiring consistent performance, production efficiency, and long-term resistance to marine conditions.

Manufacturing Process Reduces Carbon Dioxide Emissions by Approximately 68%

One of the most significant benefits of Edge-eCoat is its contribution to reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing. According to Suzuki, the technology reduces carbon dioxide emissions generated during the manufacturing process by approximately 68% compared with painting processes used to improve corrosion resistance.

This reduction supports the company’s broader efforts to advance carbon neutrality through manufacturing improvements and technological innovation. Rather than focusing exclusively on the operational performance of the finished product, Edge-eCoat also addresses the environmental footprint associated with producing marine engine components.

Manufacturing processes can contribute to environmental impact through material consumption, energy use, and the treatment methods required to protect components during their service life. By introducing an alternative surface treatment that combines corrosion resistance with lower manufacturing-related CO2 emissions, Suzuki aims to improve production sustainability while maintaining the functional requirements of outboard motors.

The technology also illustrates the potential value of integrating environmental considerations into product engineering from the development stage. By rethinking how engine components are protected against seawater, Suzuki has developed a solution that addresses both the practical demands of marine equipment and the need to reduce emissions in industrial production.

The award at the Cannes Yachting Festival recognizes this combination of technical innovation and environmental performance. Its emphasis on practical sustainability aligns with the requirements of marine manufacturing, where equipment must withstand demanding conditions while manufacturers seek opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of their operations.

Edge-eCoat Adoption Expands Across Suzuki Outboard Motor Models

Suzuki began introducing Edge-eCoat to its outboard motor lineup with the DF140B model in August 2024, with sales commencing in September 2024. Since its initial introduction, the technology has been adopted in several additional models as the company expands its use across its marine product portfolio.

The models currently incorporating Edge-eCoat include the DF140BG, DF115BG, DF115B, and DF100C, in addition to the DF140B. Suzuki has also indicated that the technology will progressively be introduced to other models and specifications.

The gradual expansion demonstrates Suzuki’s intention to apply the manufacturing innovation beyond a single product. As additional models adopt the treatment, the company can extend the benefits of improved seawater corrosion resistance and reduced manufacturing-related emissions across a wider portion of its outboard motor range.

Outboard motors are used in a variety of boating applications, making reliability and durability important considerations for customers. Components exposed to seawater require appropriate protection to help withstand repeated use in marine environments. By incorporating Edge-eCoat into multiple models, Suzuki is working to integrate its surface treatment technology more broadly into its manufacturing operations.

The company’s approach also highlights the role of production engineering in advancing sustainability. Improvements in manufacturing processes can deliver environmental benefits while supporting the quality and durability expectations associated with marine propulsion equipment.

Suzuki Credits Manufacturing Engineering and Its “Yaramaika” Spirit

Commenting on the award, Shuichi Mishima, Managing Officer and Executive General Manager of Marine Operations at Suzuki, expressed the company’s appreciation for the recognition.

“We are deeply honored that ‘Edge-eCoat’ has received the ‘Best Sustainable Product Award’ at the Cannes Yachting Festival,” Mishima said.

He explained that Suzuki views the award as recognition of the innovation delivered by its Manufacturing Engineering team. Under the company’s deeply rooted “Yaramaika” spirit, the team took on the unprecedented challenge of applying anodizing to engine components used in mass-produced outboard motors.

According to Mishima, the resulting technology achieves two important objectives: superior corrosion resistance and reduced environmental impact during manufacturing. The combination reflects Suzuki’s focus on developing solutions that address practical engineering requirements while contributing to sustainability goals.

The development of Edge-eCoat required Suzuki to adapt its surface treatment approach to the demands of mass production. In addition to protecting engine components from seawater, the process needed to be suitable for integration into the production of commercial outboard motor models. The resulting technology has moved beyond development into actual products, with adoption beginning in 2024 and expanding to additional models.

Supporting a More Sustainable Marine Environment

Suzuki said it will continue delivering valuable products to customers while actively pursuing technological development aimed at realizing a sustainable marine environment. The recognition of Edge-eCoat reinforces the importance of manufacturing innovation in helping the company progress toward that objective.

The award also underscores the growing significance of technologies that deliver measurable environmental improvements alongside practical industrial benefits. For Suzuki, Edge-eCoat demonstrates how an improvement to a specific manufacturing process can contribute to lower emissions while meeting the performance requirements of marine equipment.

As the company progressively extends the technology to more outboard motor models, Edge-eCoat is expected to remain part of Suzuki’s efforts to improve manufacturing processes and develop products with environmental considerations in mind.

Winning the Best Sustainable Product Award at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 represents a milestone for Suzuki’s marine operations and manufacturing engineering teams. With its combination of seawater corrosion resistance, mass-production application, and an approximately 68% reduction in manufacturing-related CO2 emissions compared with the specified painting processes, Edge-eCoat demonstrates Suzuki’s approach to connecting technological advancement with sustainability.

Through continued product development and the expansion of innovative manufacturing methods, Suzuki aims to provide durable marine propulsion products while contributing to efforts to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing and support a more sustainable marine industry.
