VicOne, a leader in automotive cybersecurity solutions, and Block Harbor, a trusted name in automotive cybersecurity engineering, are leading the charge with the Automotive Capture the Flag (CTF) 2024 competition. This year’s global event, offering over $100,000 in prizes, aims to engage cybersecurity enthusiasts at all levels—ranging from beginners to seasoned professionals from various sectors. Virtual qualifying rounds will run until September 8, with the in-person finals set for October 21 and the Awards Ceremony on October 23 during the 2024 Auto-ISAC Cybersecurity Summit in Detroit, Michigan, where VicOne has recently established its U.S. headquarters.
The Automotive CTF 2024 provides an opportunity for cybersecurity researchers, even those without prior automotive experience, to gain industry-specific knowledge through an online learning module and practice with past CTF challenges. Participants can enhance their skills in automotive cybersecurity regardless of their experience level.
The 2023 Cybersecurity Workforce Study by (ISC)² highlights a significant gap in the cybersecurity workforce. With a global cybersecurity workforce of 5.5 million—up 9% from 2022—the gap continues to widen, with approximately 4 million more professionals needed. The Automotive CTF competition aims to address this shortage by bringing together cybersecurity professionals at all skill levels to gain hands-on experience and join a growing community focused on the future of connected cars.
Max Cheng, CEO of VicOne, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the cybersecurity and automotive sectors. “This competition creates a platform for professionals and industry leaders to exchange ideas and develop innovative solutions, while also helping newcomers build expertise in automotive cybersecurity.”
Brandon Barry, CEO of Block Harbor, highlighted the competition’s unique aspect. “It provides a stage for both experienced players and newcomers to showcase their skills and learn, helping address the industry’s training and staff shortages.”
Block Harbor will design and execute the competition through its Vehicle Security Engineering Cloud (VSEC) platform, ensuring robust and innovative challenges. VicOne will offer valuable guidance and ensure the competition aligns with industry standards.

The in-person finals and Awards Ceremony will be held on October 21 and 23, respectively, at the MGM Grand in Detroit. The city, historically known as “Motor City,” remains a global hub for the automotive industry, with 26 OEMs and 1.1 million jobs. As the industry evolves with electric, autonomous, and software-defined vehicles, VicOne’s new Detroit location is set to drive innovation and enhance data protection in automotive cybersecurity.
The CTF Awards Ceremony will take place during the 2024 Auto-ISAC Cybersecurity Summit, a key event for building relationships and improving cybersecurity resilience in the automotive ecosystem.
