Toshiba Unveils Compact Automotive Photorelay with 900V Output Withstand Voltage

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has introduced the TLX9150M, an automotive photorelay designed with a minimum output withstand voltage of 900V, making it ideal for 400V automotive battery applications. This new photorelay is housed in a compact SO12L-T package, with volume shipments commencing today.

As electric vehicles (EVs) increasingly utilize higher-capacity and higher-voltage batteries to enhance cruising range and reduce charging time, battery management systems (BMS) are crucial for continuously monitoring and managing these batteries to optimize performance and lifespan. Additionally, BMS ensure safe isolation between the battery and the vehicle body. To accommodate high-voltage environments, electrically isolated photorelays are essential.

For battery systems, photorelays typically require a withstand voltage approximately twice the system voltage; therefore, an output withstand voltage exceeding 800V is necessary for 400V systems. The TLX9150M meets this requirement with its 900V output withstand voltage. Furthermore, its new SO12L-T package is 25% smaller than Toshiba’s previous SO16L-T package, facilitating the miniaturization of battery units and contributing to cost reduction. Importantly, the pin pitch and layout remain compatible with the SO16L-T, allowing for a consistent circuit board pattern design.
