Thermax, a leading provider of energy and environmental solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Ceres Power Holdings plc, a top developer of clean energy technology. Under this non-exclusive global license agreement, Thermax will manufacture, sell, and service stack array modules (SAM) utilizing Ceres’ advanced solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC) technology. The agreement also includes the development, commercialization, and sale of SAM balance of modules (SBM) and multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser modules. This collaboration is a major milestone in accelerating SOEC technology deployment in India and globally, aiming to enable cost-effective green hydrogen production.
Thermax will use its expertise in heat integration and waste heat recovery to produce a pioneering pressurised SAM and design and engineer SBM, essential for developing multi-megawatt SOEC electrolyser modules.
The partnership is set to transform hydrogen production by offering systems that are up to 25% more efficient than current low-temperature electrolysis technologies and make effective use of steam from industrial process heat and waste recovery. This advancement is particularly beneficial for decarbonizing industries such as ammonia/fertilizer, steel, refineries, and chemical production.
To advance commercialization, Thermax plans to establish a manufacturing facility for the electrolysers, develop the supply chain, and localize critical components.
This collaboration positions Thermax as one of the few global players offering large-scale SOEC systems for commercial use.
Ashish Bhandari, Managing Director & CEO of Thermax, remarked: “India is making significant progress towards adopting renewable energy, with a goal to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. We are thrilled to partner with Ceres to introduce advanced SOEC technology to India. Leveraging our thermal management expertise, we aim to provide an efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production solution that will expedite the energy transition both in India and globally. This partnership underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries.”
Phil Caldwell, CEO of Ceres, added: “We are excited to announce our partnership with Thermax, a leader in energy and environmental engineering across India, Europe, and Southeast Asia. This licensing agreement opens the Indian market, which is becoming increasingly vital for green hydrogen, green steel, and green ammonia. This agreement is a key part of our strategy to build a global network of top-tier partners. Our technology will enable Thermax to develop next-generation hydrogen solutions, driving market demand and supporting industrial decarbonization in this dynamic region.
