Tetra Tech, a top provider of consulting and engineering services in water, environment, and sustainable infrastructure, has announced its selection by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program. Alongside its partner, Texas A&M University (TAMU), Tetra Tech will design, build, and demonstrate a prototype mobile electron beam (eBeam) system for the on-site treatment of PFAS-affected soils and sediments.
The eBeam technology, known for its high-energy electrons capable of breaking down chemical compounds, will be applied in a groundbreaking effort to destroy PFAS compounds—a first for field testing this technology in such a capacity. Preliminary research indicates that eBeam technology can achieve up to 99 percent effectiveness in eliminating PFAS from soils.
Tetra Tech’s PFAS remediation specialists will spearhead the design and fabrication of the mobile treatment system and conduct comprehensive field tests at select DoD sites. This prototype will serve as a model for potential larger-scale mobile systems or fixed-base facilities, demonstrating the technology’s scalability for broader use and commercialization.
Dan Batrack, Tetra Tech’s Chairman and CEO, commented, “For decades, we’ve employed our Leading with Science® approach to assist the DoD in addressing environmental concerns. We are excited to collaborate with Texas A&M University to advance eBeam technology for PFAS remediation, continuing our commitment to environmental restoration and the safety of our service members and communities.”
