Tenaris Wins Major OCTG, Line Pipe, and Coating Contract for Suriname’s First Offshore Oil Development
TotalEnergies has awarded Tenaris a significant contract to supply essential tubular products and specialized services for Suriname’s first major offshore oil project, known as GranMorgu. Located approximately 150 kilometers off the coast of Suriname in Block 58, this development represents a groundbreaking step for the country’s energy industry and offers considerable promise for economic growth and regional advancement.
As part of this landmark project, Tenaris will deliver a wide range of high-performance casing and tubing products, in addition to providing its advanced Rig Direct® services. These offerings will support the safe and efficient drilling and production of oil from both shallow and deepwater wells that will be connected to a Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. First oil from the GranMorgu field is projected for 2028, with an anticipated production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day.
In a parallel award, Saipem — a global leader in engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) — has selected Tenaris to provide the seamless line pipe and thermal insulation coatings required for subsea flowlines and injection lines for the same project.
Supplying Critical OCTG for Offshore Operations
Under the TotalEnergies contract, Tenaris will supply approximately 47,000 tons of oil country tubular goods (OCTG), including casing and tubing equipped with TenarisHydril Blue® and Wedge™ Series connections, well-regarded for their high performance in demanding offshore environments. The order will also include 13% Chromium (13Cr) corrosion-resistant alloy steel grades designed to withstand the harsh subsea conditions of Block 58.
A notable feature of the delivery is Tenaris’s proprietary Dopeless® technology, which involves the application of a dry, mill-applied coating that eliminates the need for traditional thread compounds. This not only improves operational safety but also enhances rig efficiency by simplifying the handling, preparation, and installation of pipes both at sea and in storage yards.
The Rig Direct® model further supports the GranMorgu project by offering integrated services such as demand forecasting, inventory management, pipe preparation, and the coordination of surplus and returned materials. To enhance local support and logistics, Tenaris has leased a yard in Suriname, ensuring direct and timely delivery to the project site.
“This award is a testament to the value Tenaris brings by combining advanced product technologies with a full suite of specialized services,” said Andrea Bassetti, Tenaris President for the Andean Region. “We are proud to contribute to the development of Suriname’s energy sector and to support TotalEnergies in unlocking the potential of this exciting frontier.”
Providing Seamless Line Pipe and Coatings for Subsea Infrastructure
In addition to the OCTG supply, Tenaris has secured a separate contract from Saipem to supply 37,000 tons of coated seamless carbon steel line pipe, spanning a total length of around 190 kilometers. These pipes will serve as the critical infrastructure for subsea production flowlines and injection lines for water and gas, playing a pivotal role in maintaining pressure and optimizing oil recovery.
The subsea installation will be carried out at water depths of up to 1,100 meters, using specialized S-Lay and J-Lay pipelay vessels designed for deepwater deployment. The line pipe will feature anticorrosion coatings and thermal insulation, both essential for ensuring pipeline integrity and maintaining flow efficiency under high pressure and temperature conditions on the seabed.
Production of the line pipe and coating application will be handled across Tenaris’s global manufacturing network, primarily from its facilities in Italy and Mexico. This international coordination enables flexibility, consistency, and adherence to strict quality and delivery timelines.
The package is being delivered under Tenaris’s One Line® service model, which streamlines project execution by integrating line pipe manufacturing, coating application, logistics, and project management under a single framework. This approach enables adaptability and faster decision-making throughout the life of the project.
“We’re pleased that our integrated capabilities, now including Shawcor’s coatings expertise as part of the Tenaris offering, have played a role in winning this vital contract,” said Michele Della Briotta, Tenaris President for Europe. “The GranMorgu project is one of the most promising in the region’s deepwater sector, and our One Line® package will be instrumental in ensuring its successful execution.”
A Key Milestone for Suriname’s Energy Future
GranMorgu is not only a technical achievement but also a major economic catalyst for Suriname. As the country’s first large-scale offshore oil development, it is expected to drive foreign investment, infrastructure growth, and local job creation. TotalEnergies and its partners view the project as a cornerstone for Suriname’s emergence as a new oil-producing nation.
For Tenaris, this dual award reflects the company’s increasing role in high-impact offshore developments across the globe. By combining advanced metallurgical solutions, digitalized supply chain services, and integrated project execution models, Tenaris continues to position itself as a key enabler in the energy transition and offshore exploration.
