Tenaris Celebrates 25 Years of Seamless Pipe Production and Industrial Growth in Canada
Tenaris has marked a major milestone at its Industrial Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, celebrating 25 years of seamless pipe production in Canada. The event brought together employees, government representatives, industry partners, and community stakeholders to recognize a quarter-century of industrial progress and commitment to the nation’s energy future.
Since beginning operations in Canada in 2000, Tenaris has played a central role in strengthening the domestic energy supply chain, producing high-quality steel pipes essential to oil and gas exploration and production. This achievement underscores not only the company’s industrial legacy but also its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and long-term growth within Canada’s manufacturing landscape.
A Legacy of Industrial Excellence
In his remarks, Paolo Rocca, Chairman and CEO of Tenaris, highlighted the company’s deep connection to the Canadian workforce and the community of Sault Ste. Marie.
“We are pleased to celebrate this special milestone with our team — their resilience, talent, skill, and dedication have built our position as a leading industrial producer and supplier to the domestic energy industry since we first started operations in Canada 25 years ago,” Rocca said. “I would also like to thank the local community here in Sault Ste. Marie for their constant support for our activities. We see many opportunities for further growth in the coming years.”
Tenaris’s journey in Canada began when the company decided to revive a previously idle tubular mill in Sault Ste. Marie. By late 2000, Tenaris had ramped up production and began hot rolling seamless pipes, becoming the country’s only domestic producer of seamless oil country tubular goods (OCTG). This move marked a turning point in Canada’s energy manufacturing capabilities, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the domestic steel value chain.
A Decade of Expansion and Modernization
Over the past two decades, Tenaris has consistently invested in innovation and expansion to meet the evolving demands of the Canadian energy market. In 2022, the company introduced significant upgrades to its Sault Ste. Marie facility, including the addition of electric resistance welded (ERW) pipe manufacturing. With both seamless and ERW production lines now operating under one roof, the Tenaris Industrial Center has become the only facility in Canada capable of producing both types of high-performance tubular products — a distinction that reinforces its strategic importance to the nation’s energy infrastructure.
This advanced manufacturing hub enables Tenaris to support a wide range of applications, from conventional drilling to complex horizontal wells, with solutions that combine superior steel grades, precision engineering, and premium connection technologies.
Government and Community Endorsement
Canadian leaders praised Tenaris’s contributions to the local economy and its broader role in maintaining a competitive, sustainable industrial base.
Member of Parliament Terry Sheehan underscored the company’s importance to the region’s economic vitality.
“A strong steel industry contributes to a strong economy,” Sheehan noted. “We are very pleased that Tenaris is here in Canada, committed to the steel industry the way it is, doing its part for the Canadian economy through its industrial readiness and innovative approach. Our government is proud to support Tenaris and the industry. I have seen the growth over the last 25 years, and I look forward to the next 25 years.”
Local leaders echoed these sentiments. Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker emphasized Tenaris’s long-standing commitment to workforce development and community investment.
“Tenaris has long demonstrated its strong commitment to Sault Ste. Marie with significant investments to upgrade its facility, investing in workforce development, and creating economic opportunities through steel pipe manufacturing,” Shoemaker said. “This milestone represents an important moment to reflect on the successes of the last quarter century and look to the century ahead with pride in Sault Ste. Marie’s role in Tenaris’s industrial network and the investments they make in numerous organizations in the community.”
Investing in People and Communities
Tenaris’s success in Canada is built on the strength of its people. The company currently employs around 800 workers at its Sault Ste. Marie facility and about 1,200 employees nationwide. These jobs not only contribute to local economic stability but also foster skills and technical expertise vital to Canada’s industrial ecosystem.
Beyond manufacturing, Tenaris has made a meaningful social impact. In the past five years, the company has invested approximately $1.8 million in educational and healthcare initiatives in the communities where it operates. Through partnerships with local schools, universities, and health institutions, Tenaris promotes STEM education, professional development, and wellness — ensuring that its growth benefits both industry and society.
Supporting Canada’s Energy Future
The company’s state-of-the-art products have earned the trust of some of the world’s leading energy producers. Steel pipes and premium connections produced at the Sault Ste. Marie Industrial Center are used in demanding applications across Canada’s most active oil and gas regions, including the Montney and Duvernay formations. Tenaris’s advanced steel grades and innovative connection technologies have enabled customers to achieve record-breaking operational efficiency and reliability in these fields.
As Canada continues to transition toward more sustainable energy production, Tenaris’s technological capabilities and focus on industrial efficiency position it as a key contributor to a lower-carbon, more competitive energy future. The company’s seamless and welded pipe solutions not only support conventional energy projects but also have applications in carbon capture, hydrogen transport, and emerging renewable energy infrastructures.
