The Mercedes-Benz Wörth plant has inaugurated a new fast-charging park for electric trucks, marking a significant step in the electrification of its supply chain. The ceremony, attended by Steffen Weiß, Mayor of Wörth, and Andreas Bachhofer, Head of the Wörth site and Mercedes-Benz Trucks Production, featured the symbolic connection of power cables to signal the launch of six new high-performance charging stations.
A Milestone in Electric Freight Transport
The fast-charging park represents Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ commitment to transitioning its logistics operations to sustainable practices. The company aims to electrify 100% of delivery traffic to the Wörth plant by the end of 2026. Since the project’s inception, 20% of direct material deliveries to the plant have already been made using electric trucks.
This initiative is part of the brand’s broader TruckCharge program, which supports e-truck charging infrastructure, consulting, and operations. The Wörth site’s in-house charging setup enables haulage companies to charge their vehicles during waiting and unloading times, enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions.
New Charging Facilities and Future Expansion
Eight charging points are already operational on the Wörth premises, and the new fast-charging park adds six more stations, each capable of delivering 400 kW of power. Located near Gate 2, these stations cater to delivery traffic entering the plant. The facility is designed to accommodate future megawatt charging needs, with provisions for two additional stations.
Andreas Bachhofer emphasized the practical advantages of the charging park:
“With six fast-charging stations now operational, trucks can recharge while parked in the waiting area. Additional charging points will be installed near key production areas, allowing charging during loading and unloading to maximize efficiency.”
Supporting Infrastructure for High-Performance Charging
The charging park is powered by a newly constructed 6-megawatt transformer station connected to the plant’s network via a 20,000-volt high-voltage line. This robust infrastructure ensures reliable power delivery to the high-performance stations.
Driving the Transition to Electromobility
Mayor Steffen Weiß highlighted the park’s significance for the town:
“This fast-charging park symbolizes the shift to electromobility. For years, diesel refueling for trucks has been a common sight, but now the ‘refueling process’ is transitioning to electric charging within the plant premises.”
Enhancing Customer Experience
Since 2022, Mercedes-Benz has operated a separate charging park for customers at the Branch Information Center (BIC) near the Wörth plant. This facility allows e-truck customers to test various charging solutions and collaborate with experts to develop tailored charging strategies for their needs.
The new fast-charging park at the Wörth plant is a clear signal of Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ dedication to sustainable logistics and the advancement of electric mobility in the freight sector.
