STMicroelectronics has unveiled a 50W, Qi-compatible transmitter and receiver combination designed to expedite the development of wireless charging for high-power applications in medical, industrial, home appliance, and computer peripheral markets.
This new wireless charging solution allows innovators to integrate the convenience and speed of wireless charging into high-demand applications, such as vacuum cleaners, cordless power tools, drones, mobile robots, medical drug delivery devices, portable ultrasound systems, stage lighting, mobile lighting, printers, and scanners. By eliminating the need for cables, connectors, and complex docking systems, these products can become simpler, more affordable, and more durable.
The STEVAL-WBC2TX50 transmitter board delivers up to 50W of output power using the proprietary ST Super Charge (STSC) protocol, which enables faster charging than standard protocols used in smartphones and similar devices, thereby speeding up the recharging of larger batteries. The board also supports the Qi 1.3 5W Baseline Power Profile (BPP) and 15W Extended Power Profile (EPP). At its core is the STWBC2-HP transmitter system-in-package, which includes an STM32G071 Arm® Cortex®-M0 microcontroller and an application-specific front end. This front end manages signal conditioning, frequency control, and a high-resolution PWM generator to drive the transmitter, operating with any DC voltage from 4.1V to 24V. It also features MOSFET gate drivers and a D+/D- interface for USB Power Delivery. Additionally, the STWBC2-HP SiP can pair with ST’s STSAFE-A110 secure element for Qi authentication.
The STEVAL-WLC98RX receiver board can handle up to 50W of charging power, fully supporting the STSC protocol along with BPP and EPP charging. It features Adaptive Rectifier Configuration (ARC) for extended charging distance by up to 50%, enabling the use of lower-cost coils and more flexible configurations. The receiver board includes accurate voltage and current measurement for Foreign Object Detection (FOD), thermal management, and system protection. It utilizes the STWLC98 wireless power receiver IC, which contains a Cortex-M3 core and an integrated high-efficiency synchronous-rectifier power stage with a programmable output voltage up to 20V.
To assist developers, dedicated software tools—STSW-WPSTUDIO for the STEVAL-WLC98RX and STSW-WBC2STUDIO for the STEVAL-WBC2TX50—are available to customize configuration parameters. A comprehensive set of design documents is also provided to facilitate development.
Both boards are compliant with the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and are available from the ST eStore and authorized distributors. The STEVAL-WLC98RX receiver is priced at $113.93, while the STEVAL-WBC2TX50 transmitter is priced at $109.03.
