Princeton TMX Enhances Multi-Modal TMS with New Barge Capabilities

Princeton TMX, a leader in multi-modal transportation management systems (TMS), has announced a new partnership with OpenTug, a marine logistics platform focused on improving freight efficiency on inland and coastal waterways. This collaboration integrates OpenTug’s marine logistics expertise with the Princeton TMX system, allowing shippers to seamlessly book and manage terminal, barge, and vessel capacities directly within the platform.

By incorporating OpenTug’s capabilities, Princeton TMX enhances its multi-modal TMS, streamlining the entire transportation planning and execution process. This integration automates complex transactions, offering shippers improved rates, optimized lanes, and reduced risks. Shippers can now compare quotes, book capacity, and track barge shipments in the same way they manage over-the-road, rail, and intermodal transport, all within a unified system.

“Supply chains today are increasingly complex, requiring multi-modal solutions to lower costs, manage risks, and minimize environmental impacts,” said Mark McEntire, CEO of Princeton TMX. “Our partnership with OpenTug addresses a gap in the market by delivering comprehensive barge management capabilities. This integration enables shippers to handle truckload, less-than-truckload (LTL), rail, and barge operations seamlessly on a single platform.”

OpenTug combines traditional automatic identification systems (AIS) with GPS technology on barges to provide accurate ETAs, rich data, and informed decision-making. Its marketplace offers access to thousands of barges, tugs, and terminals across over 25,000 miles of marine highways. The platform also automates pricing, routing, booking, and tracking for marine logistics.

“Tug and barge transportation is a cost-effective, efficient, and eco-friendly solution for moving goods,” said Jason Aristides, CEO of OpenTug. “Despite advances in transportation technology, there remains an opportunity to better integrate barge operations with existing systems. Our integration with Princeton TMX aims to bridge this gap, enhancing the effectiveness, resilience, and sustainability of the supply chain.”
