Origin Materials, a leader in sustainable materials technology, has unveiled its innovative tethered PET beverage caps—the first of their kind. These new caps address the EU Single-Use Plastic Directive, which requires caps to remain attached to bottles across Europe. John Bissell, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Origin, emphasized that these advancements are not only well-suited for EU regulations but also positioned to meet similar requirements globally.
“Our PET cap innovations are designed for seamless recycling,” Bissell noted. “By using the same PET material for both caps and bottles, we eliminate the need for separation during recycling, improving efficiency and maintaining high-quality PET in the recycling loop.”
The new tethered PET caps build on Origin’s previously introduced PET closures, which are the lightest carbonated soft drink caps compatible with the PCO 1881 neck finish and the first to be produced at commercial scale. These caps can be made from virgin PET, recycled PET (rPET), or bio-based PET.
“Our patent-pending design integrates the cap and bottle threads to keep the cap securely attached, angled away from the mouth for ease of use,” Bissell explained. “This design combines the benefits of recyclability, extended shelf-life, lightweighting, and mono-material packaging with a superior user experience.”
Origin’s PCO 1881-compatible caps will be available in Q4 2024, with tethered versions to follow. For more information on Origin’s PET caps and closures, visit their website or contact [email protected].
