On Steel or Asphalt: Four Multi-Functional Unimogs for Dual-Mode Operation at InnoTrans

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is set to unveil the Unimog as a versatile dual-purpose vehicle for both road and rail applications at InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin, an international trade fair for transport technology. From September 24 to 27, 2024, visitors will find four different Unimog models from the implement carrier series at the Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks stand, located in the open-air area at stands O/270, O270a, and O/270b. These vehicles are designed for a range of tasks including track work, shunting, cleaning, and green space maintenance.

Unimog for Track Work: In Partnership with Müller Technologie AG

The Unimog U 530, powered by a 220 kW (299 hp) engine, has been adapted for rail use by Müller Technologie AG, a specialist in two-way vehicles. In May 2024, Müller Technologie AG officially gained “UnimogPartner” status through its collaboration with Daimler Truck AG.

This Unimog model features a 6-cylinder diesel engine (OM 936 LA) compliant with EURO VIe emissions standards, and an automated manual transmission (EAS). With a gross vehicle weight of 16.5 metric tons, it is used by Zurich’s transport company (VBZ). It can operate on track widths ranging from 1,000 mm to 1,435 mm and is adaptable for both meter-gauge and normal tracks by changing the track wheels.

The hydraulically driven track axles comply with EN 15746 class 9A standards and can manage minimum track radii of 18.5 meters. On rails, it can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h in hydrostatic mode, and on roads, it can travel at speeds up to 89 km/h. The Unimog is highly versatile, capable of mounting various modules, including snowplows, cranes, and hot-water weed control systems.

Additionally, a two-way tandem trailer with a swap body system is under development, capable of transporting 10 or 20-ft modules. These modules could be used for tasks like anchor drilling, laying contact wires, or collecting vegetation.

Remote-Controlled Shunting with Unimog from Zwiehoff

Unimog ExpertPartner G. Zwiehoff GmbH has developed the U 423 as a radio-controlled shunting vehicle. Equipped with a Knorr wagon braking system, this Unimog can handle trailer loads of up to 1,000 metric tons. Its torque converter clutch provides high tractive power, and its all-wheel drive ensures strong rail traction.

The U 423’s manual transmission offers eight forward and eight reverse gears, with a top speed of 50 km/h on rails and 89 km/h on roads. Its 4-cylinder OM 934 LA diesel engine meets EURO VIe standards. This model is designed not only for shunting but also for maintaining railway infrastructure.

Multi-Purpose Unimog for Rail Maintenance by ZAGRO

ZAGRO has developed a multi-functional Unimog U 423 for year-round use in rail infrastructure maintenance. Equipped with a torque converter clutch and EasyDrive hydrostatic drive, this Unimog is ideal for track maintenance, shunting, and seasonal tasks such as winter service.

At the fair, the U 423 will be displayed with a Dammann GSA 3003 track sprayer for vegetation control, along with additional tools like the Dücker UNA 500 front mower and Dücker FKM 2200 front sweeper. Its VarioPilot® dual-mode steering allows the driver to switch seat positions for better visibility during operations.

Urban Rail Network Cleaning by CMAR

The Unimog U 423, developed by CMAR (Construction Mécanique Automatisé Rivard), is designed for maneuvering, shunting, and cleaning urban rail networks. Like other Unimog models, it features all-wheel drive and a 4-cylinder diesel engine compliant with EURO VIe standards.

Equipped with a 2,100-liter water tank and a 4 m³ stainless steel waste receptacle, it operates using work hydraulics and VarioPower® power hydraulics. The system powers multiple devices like a high-pressure water pump and brushes for rail cleaning. Proven effective in France and beyond, this system ensures efficient rail and groove cleaning.

Future Unimog Safety and Control Features

Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz plans to equip the Unimog with new safety systems in compliance with the GSR (EU Regulation 2019/2144 General Safety Regulation II). These include Sideguard Assist, Frontguard Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, a reversing camera, and a tire pressure loss warning system.

In addition, the new UNI-TOUCH® operating system will streamline control of Unimog attachments. Featuring a redesigned center console with a customizable control interface, this system allows users to save application profiles and recurring tasks for greater efficiency. Other new features include a start/stop button and updated control panels.
