New Electric Induction Coil Lowers Carbon Footprint at Tenaris Mill in Colombia

Tenaris has invested $520,000 USD to install an electric induction coil in the upsetting line at its TuboCaribe seamless steel pipe mill in Cartagena, Colombia, replacing a natural gas-fired furnace.

The upsetting line, which increases the diameter and thickness of pipe ends, processes around 24,500 tons of pipes annually. With the new equipment, the heating time for pipes is reduced from five minutes to just 20 seconds, significantly lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 2,000 to 3,000 tons each year. Before this investment, the line consumed approximately 1.3 million cubic meters of natural gas annually.

“The introduction of this electric induction coil, which eliminates natural gas from our upsetting process, is part of the energy efficiency measures we are implementing across our industrial operations to support Tenaris’s decarbonization goals,” said Andrea Bassetti, President of Tenaris for the Andean region.

Tenaris has set a target to reduce CO2 emissions per ton of steel by 30% by 2030. The company is rolling out various projects across its global operations to meet this objective. At TuboCaribe, there are also plans to install solar panels to generate renewable energy for part of the facility’s power needs.

Other decarbonization initiatives include the installation of an electric arc furnace with Consteel® technology at the Siderca industrial center in Argentina, as well as the construction of wind farms in Argentina and solar power projects in China, Italy, and Romania.
