Mercedes-Benz Celebrates 70,000 Citaro Buses with All-Electric eCitaro Debuting in the Netherlands

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro has reached a remarkable milestone, with 70,000 units produced since its debut in 1997. This achievement solidifies its position as the most successful bus in Daimler Buses’ history. The milestone was celebrated at the Daimler Buses eMobility Days 2.0 in Berlin, where Till Oberwörder, CEO of Daimler Buses, and Mirko Sgodda, Head of Marketing, Sales, and Customer Services, ceremonially handed over the 70,000th bus—a fully electric eCitaro—to Karen Bosch, COO of HTM Personenvervoer N.V., The Hague, Netherlands.

Pioneering the Future of Urban Mobility

Till Oberwörder, CEO, Daimler Buses:

Karen Bosch, COO, HTM Personenvervoer:
“The arrival of the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro marks an important step in creating a greener and more sustainable transport network in The Hague. This bus not only offers passengers a quieter, more comfortable ride but also provides our drivers with a modern, ergonomic workplace to enhance their experience on the job.”

Advanced Features of the Anniversary eCitaro

The 70,000th Citaro is part of a fleet of 95 eCitaro and eCitaro G buses ordered by HTM for operations in The Hague. This three-door electric bus features the latest NMC 3 battery technology, ensuring efficient performance and longer operational range. Charging is facilitated by a pantograph system, making it easy to integrate into modern e-mobility infrastructures.

Equipped with advanced safety systems, including Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and Attention Assist (AtAs), the eCitaro enhances safety for both passengers and road users.

The interior offers a welcoming and modern ambiance with wood-look flooring and HTM’s signature luxuriously upholstered seating. It also includes designated wheelchair and pram spaces to ensure accessibility. A state-of-the-art automatic climate control system provides a comfortable and pleasant environment for all passengers.

HTM Personenvervoer: Leading Sustainable Public Transport

HTM Personenvervoer N.V. operates The Hague’s tram and bus networks. Alongside the delivery of eCitaro and eCitaro G buses, Daimler Buses Solutions has also provided the necessary e-mobility infrastructure to support their operation, ensuring seamless integration into HTM’s transport network.

The Legacy of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro

Since its introduction in 1997, the Mercedes-Benz Citaro has revolutionized urban transportation. Its first generation set new standards for passenger comfort, safety, and design. The second generation, launched in 2011, further cemented its legacy, including being the first city bus to meet the Euro VI emissions standard in 2012.

The all-electric eCitaro, introduced in 2018, continues this tradition of innovation, making it one of Europe’s most popular electric buses. Recognized with numerous awards, including multiple “Bus of the Year” and “Electric Bus Champion” titles, the Citaro remains a leader in sustainable urban transit.

The 70,000th Citaro is a landmark in this ongoing success story, highlighting Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to eco-friendly transportation and passenger-centric solutions.
