Lockheed Martin Sikorsky Secures U.S. Army Contract for Black Hawk® Helicopter Modernization

Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company (NYSE: LMT), has announced that it has been awarded a new contract from the U.S. Army that will serve as a key driver in the modernization of the Black Hawk® helicopter fleet. The contract, valued at an initial $43 million, will fund engineering efforts aimed at enhancing the aircraft’s long-term operational capabilities and ensuring that the Black Hawk remains a vital asset for decades to come.

The work funded under this agreement will concentrate on several critical areas of modernization. These include airframe enhancements to improve structural performance and endurance, the integration of a digital backbone designed to accelerate the adoption of new technologies, and the implementation of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to refine requirements, streamline system architecture, and support collaborative digital design and testing. Together, these initiatives will position the Black Hawk for a future where advanced digital technologies and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) play an increasingly important role in combat operations.

Building on a Combat-Proven Legacy

The Black Hawk helicopter has served as one of the U.S. Army’s most reliable and versatile aircraft for more than four decades. Known for its rugged design, adaptability, and combat record across multiple theaters, the helicopter has been a backbone of U.S. and allied air mobility, medical evacuation, troop transport, and logistical missions. The modernization effort is not simply a continuation of this history but an expansion of it, ensuring that the Black Hawk can evolve with the Army’s operational needs.

Hamid Salim, vice president of Army and Air Force Systems at Sikorsky, underscored the importance of this step forward:

“Sikorsky is ready to implement new technologies that will strengthen the combat-proven Black Hawk helicopter and give U.S. Army soldiers greater advantage in areas like the Indo-Pacific. Integrating launched effects into the Black Hawk will enhance its capabilities and provide a significant advantage. Modernization is reducing costs, increasing efficiency and improving the overall maintenance and sustainment for the aircraft.”

Integration of Launched Effects

One of the most critical near-term objectives for this program is the integration of launched effects into the Black Hawk fleet. This capability will allow helicopters to deploy small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and other mission payloads while in flight, dramatically expanding their effectiveness on the battlefield. By acting as a launch platform, the Black Hawk will be able to extend situational awareness, reconnaissance reach, and survivability for troops on the ground.

Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky have already been demonstrating this capability for several years, validating technologies that enable the Black Hawk to work in concert with unmanned systems. According to the Army’s plans, a federated launched effects capability is expected to be fielded as early as 2026, bringing significant new mission flexibility to the aircraft.

Advancing with Digital Engineering

Another cornerstone of the modernization program is the use of digital engineering and MBSE tools. By creating a “digital thread” for the Black Hawk, Sikorsky and the Army will be able to design, test, and sustain the helicopter using advanced modeling and simulation. This approach reduces the need for costly physical prototypes, accelerates the testing process, and ensures that updates and upgrades can be integrated seamlessly throughout the helicopter’s lifecycle.

The development of a digital backbone also aligns with the Army’s push toward a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA). With MOSA, the Black Hawk will gain the flexibility to quickly accept new sensors, avionics, and mission systems as threats evolve. This modularity ensures that future innovations—ranging from artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled decision aids to autonomous flight control systems—can be integrated more easily and at lower cost.

Enhancements for Greater Payload and Range

The modernization package also lays the groundwork for enhancements to the helicopter’s airframe, fuel system, and powerplant. A more powerful engine, combined with structural improvements, will give the Black Hawk the ability to carry heavier payloads over greater distances. This is particularly significant for operations in challenging environments such as high-altitude or maritime regions, where performance margins are often tested. Future upgrades to flight controls are expected to incorporate elements of autonomy and AI, helping pilots navigate dangerous conditions and improving overall mission safety and effectiveness.

Commitment to the Warfighter and Industry

Sikorsky emphasized that the modernization effort is not being undertaken alone but with a broad coalition of American suppliers who contribute components and systems to the Black Hawk program.

“Together with our team of hundreds of American suppliers, we are committed to delivering the most advanced and capable modernized Black Hawk to the U.S. Army,” Salim added. “We look forward to continuing our work with the Army to ensure that the Black Hawk remains a vital component of our nation’s defense capabilities for years to come.”

Fielding Technology Today

Even as the modernization program moves forward, Sikorsky is already providing incremental upgrades to the Black Hawk fleet. One example is the production and delivery of Upturned Exhaust System II kits. These kits are designed to improve the aircraft’s survivability and performance by reducing infrared signatures, lowering weight, and improving overall reliability and maintainability. Importantly, these upgrades will benefit both current Black Hawks and their modernized counterparts, bridging today’s fleet with tomorrow’s advancements.

A Future-Ready Platform

With this contract, Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin have laid the foundation for a Black Hawk helicopter that is not only more powerful and adaptable but also digitally interconnected and prepared for the next generation of warfare. By focusing on digital engineering, modularity, and integration with unmanned systems, the program ensures that the Black Hawk will remain at the forefront of Army aviation well into the future.

At its core, the modernization effort reflects a balance of continuity and innovation—sustaining the aircraft’s proven legacy while preparing it to meet the rapidly evolving demands of modern combat.
