LATAM Expands Fleet with Order of 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners

LATAM Airlines Group, the premier passenger and cargo airline group in South America, has announced the purchase of 10 additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with options for five more aircraft. As the region’s largest operator of the 787, LATAM is committed to expanding its fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, strengthening its position as a leading carrier in Latin America.

Currently operating 37 Boeing 787-8s and 787-9s, LATAM plans to grow its fleet to 52 Dreamliners by 2030. The new 787-9 aircraft will allow LATAM to increase capacity on popular routes and launch new ones, such as its nonstop service to Sydney, Australia. “The Boeing 787 is a highly efficient aircraft, enabling us to continue our sustainable growth strategy while reducing our carbon footprint,” said Ramiro Alfonsín, LATAM Airlines Group CFO. “This order will ensure delivery of at least two aircraft each year from 2025 until the end of the decade.”

The Boeing 787 family offers significant advantages in fuel efficiency, reducing fuel usage and emissions by 25% compared to previous models. The 787-9 variant, with its extended range and capacity, allows airlines to serve more passengers and transport cargo across greater distances.

“We value LATAM’s continued trust in the 787 Dreamliner to support the growth of its international network from key hubs in Santiago, São Paulo, and Lima,” said Mike Wilson, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. “As demand for air travel continues to grow, we are committed to supporting LATAM’s mission to connect Latin America with the world.”

Since its introduction in 2011, the 787 Dreamliner has been pivotal in opening over 400 new nonstop routes and reducing global carbon emissions by more than 173 billion pounds. According to Boeing’s 2024 Commercial Market Outlook, air travel in Latin America is expected to double over the next two decades, with a projected fleet size of over 3,000 airplanes by 2043, driven by annual growth of 5%.

As a global leader in aerospace, Boeing is dedicated to developing, manufacturing, and servicing a wide range of commercial, defense, and space products for customers in over 150 countries.
