Keel Invests $34.5M to Expand Facilities and Enhance Capabilities in Michigan

Keel Holdings, LLC, a leader in defense and advanced manufacturing, recently completed a $34.5 million investment to expand its production capabilities and enhance workforce development across its Alma and Merrill facilities in Michigan. This strategic initiative includes expanding facilities, upgrading machinery, and enhancing workforce training programs.

Facility Expansion and Advanced Machinery

At Keel’s Alma location, new manufacturing equipment has been installed to boost production efficiency. Key additions include a Ursviken 4,400-ton press brake for precise metal forming and a Wheelabrator Model PSM-836-4-40 for surface treatment. The site also upgraded existing software and added a rotary table to its ARC-05i Cladding System, enhancing operational capabilities.

“Our Alma facility has long led in welding innovation,” said Brian Englehardt, Alma Plant Manager. “These investments enable us to increase throughput while upholding the high-quality standards our customers expect. It reinforces our commitment to remaining a leader in welding and fabrication.”

Keel’s Merrill location also saw major improvements in 2024, with a 36,000-square-foot expansion and the installation of four advanced high-speed 5-axis machining centers: two FPT Dinomax centers, an FPT Raptocut, and an FPT Dinowide. Additionally, an API Dynamic 9D LADAR system was introduced for detailed measurement and inspection, allowing the facility to handle larger and more intricate projects.

“We’re thrilled about the expansion of our Merrill facility,” said Troy Genow, Merrill Plant Manager. “This added space and new technology not only increase our capacity but also expand our project capabilities. It’s a significant advancement for our team and our clients.”

Workforce Development: Merrill Institute & CNC Apprenticeship Program

Alongside these facility and technology expansions, Keel is deeply committed to investing in its workforce. The Merrill Institute, located within Keel’s Alma site, has provided students with hands-on welding training from AWS-certified instructors since 2011. The program offers students real-world experience in a cutting-edge manufacturing environment.

“We believe in empowering our team members with ongoing professional development,” said Jason North, Director of Merrill Institute. “Every student who graduates from our program leaves with the confidence and skills to excel in today’s demanding workplaces.”

Keel also offers an internal CNC training program to support employees’ career growth and development. Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, highly regarded by the manufacturing sector as a mark of advanced skills.
