Kaiser Aluminum Appoints Fred Stephan as CEO and President, Marking Planned Leadership Transition
Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (NASDAQ: KALU), a leading producer of semi-fabricated specialty aluminum products, has announced a planned leadership transition designed to support the company’s long-term growth and succession strategy. The company’s Board of Directors has appointed Fred Stephan as Chief Executive Officer and President, effective November 1, 2026. Stephan will be based in Franklin, Tennessee, where Kaiser Aluminum is headquartered.
Stephan will succeed Keith A. Harvey, who has served as Kaiser Aluminum’s Chief Executive Officer since July 31, 2020. Harvey has also served as Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors since January 1, 2025. As part of the leadership transition, Stephan will join Kaiser Aluminum’s Board of Directors when he assumes his new executive responsibilities.
Harvey will remain closely involved with the company during the transition. He will serve as a special advisor to Stephan through October 31, 2027, helping ensure continuity in leadership, strategy and operations. Following Stephan’s appointment as CEO and President, Harvey will continue serving on the Board as Executive Chairman.
The transition represents the latest step in Kaiser Aluminum’s succession planning process and is intended to provide continuity while bringing new leadership experience to the company as it enters its next stage of development.
Board Highlights Leadership Continuity and Long-Term Strategy
Michael Arnold, Kaiser Aluminum’s Lead Independent Director, said the Board conducted a deliberate and comprehensive CEO succession process before selecting Stephan for the position.
According to Arnold, the Board believes Stephan possesses the leadership capabilities, operational experience and strategic perspective required to build on the company’s existing momentum. The Board views the transition as part of its broader commitment to effective corporate governance, long-term value creation and leadership continuity.
Arnold also emphasized the strength of Kaiser Aluminum’s existing leadership team and the company’s ability to continue executing its strategic priorities during the transition.
The Board expressed appreciation for Harvey’s contributions throughout his more than four decades with Kaiser Aluminum. Harvey has been associated with the company for approximately 45 years, taking on a variety of responsibilities before becoming CEO in 2020.
During his tenure as CEO, Harvey focused on strengthening Kaiser Aluminum’s operational and commercial capabilities. He helped develop a broad leadership team and established a multi-disciplinary leadership development program intended to reinforce the company’s culture and maintain consistency in strategic execution.
The Board credited Harvey with helping position Kaiser Aluminum as a differentiated participant in the specialty aluminum industry.
Harvey to Support Transition as Executive Chairman
Harvey described his time as Kaiser Aluminum’s CEO as the highlight of his career and expressed confidence in the company’s future.
After more than four decades with the organization, Harvey said he is proud of the company’s people, culture and operating foundation. His continued role as Executive Chairman and special advisor is expected to allow him to remain engaged with Kaiser Aluminum while providing Stephan with the benefit of his extensive knowledge and experience.
The extended transition period is particularly important for a company operating complex manufacturing facilities and serving demanding end markets. Kaiser Aluminum produces specialized aluminum products that require close coordination between manufacturing, engineering, quality, customer relationships and commercial operations.
Harvey’s continued involvement through October 2027 is expected to provide additional continuity as Stephan assumes responsibility for the company’s operations and strategic direction.
Stephan Brings Extensive Global Manufacturing Experience
Fred Stephan joins Kaiser Aluminum with approximately 38 years of experience focused on manufacturing, customer solutions, operational improvement and profitability.
Throughout his career, Stephan has worked across complex global manufacturing organizations, with an emphasis on understanding customer requirements and developing value-added products and solutions. His experience spans operations, research and development, commercial activities and business leadership.
Most recently, Stephan served as Chief Operating Officer of Amcor Global Flexible Packaging Solutions. In that position, he was responsible for a broad global organization covering manufacturing, research and development and commercial functions.
His responsibilities included sales, marketing and product management across more than 200 manufacturing sites in over 35 countries, representing a workforce of approximately 40,000 employees.
This experience provides Stephan with extensive exposure to large-scale international manufacturing operations, complex supply chains, customer relationships and performance improvement initiatives.
Experience at Amcor and Bemis
From 2019 through 2024, Stephan served as a Business Group President of Amcor Flexibles North America. He assumed the role following Amcor’s acquisition of Bemis Company, where he previously served as President of Bemis North America.
His leadership at Bemis gave him significant experience managing a major North American manufacturing business and working with customers across multiple markets.
Following the acquisition, Stephan continued in a senior leadership capacity within Amcor, helping manage the integration and operations of the combined organization.
His background in both independent and integrated manufacturing environments is expected to be valuable at Kaiser Aluminum, particularly as the company continues to serve specialized customers with highly engineered products.
Leadership Experience at Johns Manville and GE
Before his roles at Amcor and Bemis, Stephan spent more than a decade in senior leadership positions at Johns Manville, a Berkshire Hathaway company.
His experience at Johns Manville added further depth to his manufacturing and industrial leadership background, exposing him to complex operations, specialty materials and industrial markets.
Earlier in his career, Stephan held several leadership positions at General Electric Company. Among those roles, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Lighting Systems.
His career at GE provided experience in a large, globally recognized industrial organization and gave him exposure to technology-driven manufacturing, business development and operational leadership.
Stephan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. His technical education complements his extensive management experience across manufacturing and industrial businesses.
Stephan Focuses on Building on Kaiser Aluminum’s Foundation
Following the announcement, Stephan expressed enthusiasm about joining Kaiser Aluminum and praised the company’s business model, culture and workforce.
He described Kaiser Aluminum as an exceptional company with a highly differentiated business and brand. Stephan also recognized the strength of the organization that Harvey and the broader leadership team have built.
As incoming CEO and President, Stephan plans to build on that foundation rather than fundamentally change the company’s established direction. His comments emphasized continued value creation for shareholders, customers and employees.
The leadership transition will provide Stephan with an opportunity to leverage his extensive manufacturing experience while working closely with Harvey, the Board of Directors and Kaiser Aluminum’s existing leadership team.
His background in developing customer-focused solutions and improving profitability could support Kaiser Aluminum’s efforts to strengthen its competitive position in specialized aluminum markets.

The company’s long-standing culture emphasizes quality, innovation and service. Its product portfolio and manufacturing capabilities are designed to support customers that require highly engineered aluminum solutions.
The appointment of Stephan comes as the company continues to operate in an increasingly competitive manufacturing environment where customers are seeking advanced materials that can help improve product performance, reduce weight and meet evolving technical requirements.

A New Chapter for Kaiser Aluminum

The succession process reflects the Board’s emphasis on long-term planning and stable leadership. Stephan brings decades of experience across global manufacturing, materials-related businesses and complex industrial operations, while Harvey will remain available to support the transition through October 2027.
As Stephan takes over the company’s executive leadership, Kaiser Aluminum will continue focusing on its core specialty aluminum businesses and the customers it serves across aerospace, automotive, packaging, general engineering and other industrial markets.
With its established manufacturing footprint, specialized product portfolio and long-standing reputation for quality and innovation, Kaiser Aluminum enters this leadership transition from a position built over decades.
The combination of Stephan’s global manufacturing experience, Harvey’s continued guidance and the company’s existing leadership capabilities is intended to provide a smooth transition while maintaining focus on strategic execution and long-term value creation.
Kaiser Aluminum’s stock is included in the Russell 2000® and S&P Small Cap 600® indexes.
