IonQ and University of Maryland Forge $9M Partnership to Advance Quantum Innovation

IonQ, a leader in quantum computing, and the University of Maryland (UMD), a global authority in quantum research and applications, have announced an expanded partnership to enhance quantum computing capabilities at the National Quantum Lab at Maryland (QLab). This collaboration will provide UMD-affiliated students, faculty, researchers, and partners with unique opportunities to work closely with IonQ’s team, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge trapped ion quantum computers. UMD’s 35-year investment in quantum research has established it as a global hub of quantum expertise, with notable contributions such as Nobel Laureate Dr. William Phillips. The University boasts 10 quantum-focused centers, housing over 200 researchers who produce 200+ publications annually and have graduated 100+ PhDs in quantum-related fields over the past decade.

As a result of these efforts, QLab has emerged as a key quantum innovation center, contributing to the state’s economic growth while attracting top-tier talent. IonQ and UMD are also committed to supporting the global scientific community, offering access to their resources for high-impact research. The partnership is further cemented by UMD’s ongoing efforts to build connections with Maryland universities and international researchers.

“This partnership strengthens IonQ’s commitment to the state of Maryland, a state that has positioned itself as the Capital of Quantum,” said Peter Chapman, IonQ President and CEO. “UMD’s dedication to quantum research, coupled with the collaborative nature of QLab, makes them the ideal partner to accelerate breakthroughs in the quantum industry.”

“UMD’s continued partnership with IonQ reaffirms our commitment to quantum innovation and the dramatic impact it is making in academia, government, and the public sector,” added Darryll J. Pines, President of the University of Maryland. “IonQ’s industry-leading technology and expertise make them an invaluable partner in driving quantum research and development that will transform lives here in Maryland and around the world.”

Since its launch, QLab has supported a variety of academic research projects, undergraduate intern cohorts, and companies within UMD’s Quantum Startup Foundry and the Mid-Atlantic Quantum Alliance. It has also hosted workshops for government agencies such as NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and welcomed international delegations and government visitors.

The grand opening of QLab marked a turning point in fostering a diverse, collaborative quantum research community in Maryland and beyond. The lab has united stakeholders from academia, industry, and government, and has integrated researchers from various fields, including materials science, aerospace engineering, and climate science.

UMD and IonQ are dedicated to expanding the quantum computing community by supporting research that drives innovation, enables scientific discoveries, and trains the next generation of quantum experts.
