Hyundai N Unveils Bold RN24 at N Day 2024, Setting the Stage for Future High-Performance EVs

At its N Day 2024 event, Hyundai Motor Company’s high-performance N division introduced the RN24, a groundbreaking “Rolling Lab” model that explores the future of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs). The annual N Day event highlights Hyundai N’s dedication to innovation in motorsport-ready technologies and showcases Hyundai N’s three core principles: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar. These pillars reflect Hyundai N’s commitment to creating exhilarating driving experiences enabled by EV technology.

“Hyundai N is not just a brand but a representation of our commitment to innovation and high performance,” remarked Manfred Harrer, Executive Vice President and Head of the Genesis and Performance Development Tech Unit. “RN24 is a testament to our bold ambitions for the future.”

As the latest in Hyundai N’s Rolling Lab series, RN24 builds on a legacy of experimental vehicles bridging motorsport technology with N production models. Following the RM (Racing Midship) series, RN24 joins EVs like the RN22e and N Vision 74, embodying Hyundai’s goal of testing high-performance technologies through its Rolling Labs.

The global debut of RN24 showcases N’s future vision, packing the IONIQ 5 N’s powerful 650 PS dual-motor power electronics (PE) system into a compact World Rally Championship (WRC)-inspired chassis. This results in a lightweight and agile vehicle, tailored for N-thusiasts and designed to maximize performance in a smaller, more nimble package.

RN24 is more than a test vehicle; it’s a platform for innovation, pushing the boundaries of high-performance EVs by focusing not only on power and speed but also on drivability and precision. Powered by the IONIQ 5 N’s PE system, RN24 features a redesigned battery pack maintaining an 84 kWh capacity but reducing the wheelbase to B-segment size—akin to Hyundai’s i20 N Rally1 WRC model. The car also integrates a WRC-inspired suspension with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes for enhanced stability and performance.

Equipped with WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic, RN24 allows drivers to adjust PE Power, Acceleration Sensitivity, Regenerative Brake Sensitivity, and PE Power Balance, much like Hyundai’s WRC challengers. Enhanced cooling for the battery and motor and faster steering deliver agility and a rally car-level response.

An external high-output sound system complements RN24’s performance, with additional side speakers and an enhanced rear fender design that acts as a soundbox, amplifying the immersive experience.

RN24’s “Rally Mode” motor torque control stands out as a key innovation, optimizing torque distribution across all four wheels, similar to the i20 N Rally1’s four-wheel drive system. This feature streamlines torque control, making it adaptable for future production vehicles.

The e-Handbrake, inspired by Hyundai N’s WRC experience, reduces weight and simplifies braking, eliminating the need for physical side brake components. Hyundai recently tested this technology in the WRC’s Central European Rally.

Visually, RN24 features an exposed roll cage, inspired by WRC designs, which enhances safety and improves stability during high-speed maneuvers. N Performance Parts, including 19-inch matte black forged wheels from the Elantra N, contribute to RN24’s aesthetic and performance. A spoiler from Hyundai’s Touring Car Racing (TCR) models adds aerodynamic efficiency, while 3D-printed gussets improve rigidity and reduce weight.

These features together define RN24, exemplifying Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing EV motorsport technology. “RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritizing the driving experience rather than spec numbers,” said Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group. “This Rolling Lab proves the potential of high-performance EVs, and we are excited for what’s ahead.
