Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) has unveiled its comprehensive hydrogen solutions and roadmap at H2 MEET 2024, Korea’s largest hydrogen industry exhibition, held from September 25 to 27 at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) near Seoul.
Under the theme “Be a First Mover in Hydrogen,” the Group showcased its hydrogen business and technologies covering the entire hydrogen value chain under the HTWO brand. This presentation builds on the hydrogen vision initially introduced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
H2 MEET 2024 marks the first event where all Group affiliates are participating together under HTWO. Affiliates include Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Rotem, Hyundai Steel, Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai E&C, and Hyundai Glovis. At its large exhibition booth, the Group presents four scenario-based hydrogen value chain business solutions, each with staff available for explanations and digital docents accessible via smartphones.
The first scenario, “Energy Security,” highlights the Group’s cutting-edge hydrogen production technologies such as W2H (Waste-to-Hydrogen) and P2H (Plastic-to-Hydrogen). W2H produces hydrogen from organic waste like food and sewage sludge, while P2H converts non-recyclable plastics into hydrogen. The exhibition also features Korea’s first W2H facility in Chungju, which supplies hydrogen to local refueling stations.
Visitors can explore Hyundai Motor’s field-proven hydrogen cell system and reverse electrolysis technology—specifically, PEM electrolysis, which is ideal for producing high-purity hydrogen. The exhibit showcases Korea’s first PEM electrolysis production facility in Buan, operated by Hyundai E&C, alongside other hydrogen applications.
The second scenario, “Port & Airport Decarbonization,” focuses on hydrogen solutions for high-emission industrial complexes such as ports and airports. Hyundai Motor has successfully deployed 30 Class 8 XCIENT Fuel Cell hydrogen-powered trucks in California’s NorCAL ZERO Project to reduce emissions at the Port of Oakland. The company is also developing hydrogen infrastructure at Incheon International Airport, including hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell electric trucks for airport logistics.
In the third scenario, “Industrial Applications & Businesses,” Hyundai outlines its efforts to transition the current industrial logistics system from fossil fuel and diesel trucks to hydrogen-powered trucks. Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Glovis have formed a joint venture, HTWO Logistics, to implement this change, starting at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia, U.S., with plans to expand globally.
The final scenario, “Hydrogen Society,” offers a vision for a sustainable future where workplaces and living environments are cleaner and more efficient through hydrogen technology, in line with the Group’s vision, “Together for a Better Future.” This exhibit showcases a full lineup of hydrogen-powered applications including ships, trams, forklifts, generators, and heavy equipment. Hyundai Rotem’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tram is also featured through an immersive VR experience.
A large-scale diorama presents a future hydrogen society, illustrating how the Group plans to act as an “Energy Mobilizer,” leveraging the combined strengths of its affiliates across the entire hydrogen value chain.
The Group reaffirms its commitment to leading the global energy transition, aiming to achieve net zero by 2045. This includes adopting renewable energy at its work sites and expanding its hydrogen business to make hydrogen energy accessible across all sectors of life and industry.
