Over the past five years, Towson University (TU) has proudly supported five cohorts of women pursuing degrees in STEM through its Hill-Lopes Scholars Program. Established by Barbara Hill and her husband, Ancelmo Lopes, the program is a pioneering initiative aimed at leveling the playing field for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The Hill-Lopes Scholars Program offers more than just financial support; it provides a comprehensive framework to help participants excel. Scholars benefit from one-on-one mentoring, career exploration, professional development, and confidence-building experiences, all while being part of a supportive community. These opportunities are designed to prepare them for successful careers in industries where women have traditionally been underrepresented.
“As someone who understands the challenges women often face in male-dominated fields, supporting this program is my way of helping break down those barriers to create new pathways to success for women in STEM,” says Barbara Hill, operating partner at NexPhase Capital. “Through the program, we can foster a future where these talented women are empowered to lead, innovate, and inspire others as they pursue careers in STEM fields.”
Building a Pathway to Success
A key element of the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program is its focus on career exploration. Scholars participate in visits to companies and organizations, gaining a behind-the-scenes perspective on potential careers and networking with professionals in their fields. These experiences are complemented by professional development workshops and career-centered training, enabling scholars to build essential skills and establish connections with potential employers.
“Through the program, these young women gain access to unique opportunities that help them develop academically and professionally,” explains Kristin Pinkowski, program coordinator. “As we equip them with the tools they need to succeed, they are becoming the next generation of leaders who will shape the future of STEM.”
The program also emphasizes community building, fostering an environment where scholars can thrive. By interacting with peers and mentors who share their challenges and aspirations, participants build lasting relationships that support their personal and professional growth.
Real-World Impact
In its first five years, the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program has seen numerous success stories. Graduates of the program have gone on to launch their careers at leading organizations such as Northrop Grumman, Booz Allen Hamilton, and the Department of Defense. Others have pursued advanced studies at prestigious institutions, further demonstrating the program’s impact.
For Emily Aguirre ’25, the program was transformative. “I found my passion for computer science through this program, and all the support made me more confident about pursuing a career in cybersecurity,” she says. Upon her graduation in the spring, Aguirre will join Deloitte, where she looks forward to making her mark in the tech industry.
A Call to Action
As the program looks to the future, it remains committed to advancing and retaining women in STEM fields. However, its continued success depends on community support. Donations are vital to sustaining initiatives such as field trips, conferences, and career-building events, which provide scholars with invaluable experiences.
By contributing to the Hill-Lopes Scholars Program, donors play a direct role in empowering women to overcome systemic barriers and excel in their chosen fields. “Consider making a gift to sponsor events, field trips, and the conference fund,” says Pinkowski. “With your support, we can continue to improve the advancement and retention of women in STEM fields.”
The Hill-Lopes Scholars Program at Towson University is not just a celebration of its past achievements but a commitment to shaping a future where women in STEM can lead, innovate, and inspire. Through its holistic approach, the program is helping to transform the landscape of STEM, one scholar at a time.
