Grounded Secures $5M Seed Round, Opens New 50,000-Square-Foot Manufacturing Facility to Scale Commercial Fleet Production

Grounded Raises $5 Million to Expand Detroit Manufacturing and Launch New Commercial Vehicle Platform

Grounded, a Detroit-based advanced manufacturing and mobility company specializing in modular electric vehicles, has announced the successful close of a $5 million seed financing round and plans to move production into a new 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Detroit. The expansion represents a major milestone for the company as it transitions into a larger-scale vehicle manufacturer and broadens its focus beyond electric recreational vehicles toward commercial and government fleet applications.

The new facility is expected to increase Grounded’s production capacity by approximately 1,900%, giving the company the manufacturing infrastructure needed to support growing customer demand. The expansion will also enable Grounded to introduce a new vehicle-agnostic box platform designed to extend its software-defined, modular vehicle architecture into a significantly larger commercial fleet market.

The platform is intended to support both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, allowing Grounded to address a broader range of commercial applications and fleet requirements.

Sam Shapiro, Founder and CEO of Grounded, described the new manufacturing facility as an important turning point for the company. He said Grounded was established to develop intelligent, modular electric vehicles for businesses and institutions that play essential roles in communities and cities. With the additional manufacturing capacity, the company expects to build vehicles at the scale required by fleet customers while extending its platform to a broader class of commercial vehicles.

$5 Million Investment Supports Manufacturing Expansion

The newly secured $5 million seed round will support several critical areas of Grounded’s next phase of growth. A significant portion of the funding will be directed toward establishing the manufacturing line for the company’s new box platform.

This investment will include new tooling, production equipment and research and development activities required to prepare the platform for scaled manufacturing. Grounded will also use the financing to build out its expanded Detroit production facility and strengthen the teams responsible for manufacturing, engineering and sales.

The investment comes as demand for specialized fleet vehicles continues to develop across industries. Businesses increasingly require vehicles that can be adapted to specific operational requirements rather than relying exclusively on standardized commercial models.

Grounded’s modular approach is designed to address this need. Instead of developing a completely new vehicle for every application, the company can use a common underlying vehicle platform and configure it for different customers, industries and operational purposes.

This strategy is intended to reduce development complexity while enabling fleet operators to obtain vehicles tailored to their specific requirements.

New Box Platform Broadens Commercial Market

Grounded’s upcoming box platform represents an important expansion of its existing vehicle architecture. The company has developed a software-defined, modular platform that allows vehicle configurations to be adapted to different applications.

The new box platform extends that concept to a wider commercial vehicle market. Potential applications include food and beverage operations, field services, public safety, mobile healthcare and other industries that rely heavily on specialized vehicles.

Nadia Meyer, Chief Product Officer at Grounded, said the economy is increasingly becoming dependent on vehicles and that the company is seeing notable growth across areas such as food and beverage franchises, field operations, public safety and mobile healthcare.

According to Meyer, the box platform is designed to accommodate these use cases while helping Grounded increase manufacturing speed and address a substantial commercial market opportunity.

The ability to adapt a common platform for multiple purposes could be particularly valuable for fleet operators. Rather than purchasing vehicles that require extensive aftermarket modifications, customers could potentially receive configurations designed around their operational needs from the beginning.

Existing Customers Span Multiple Industries

Grounded has already begun deploying its electric fleet vehicles across a diverse range of industries. Its customers include Colgate, Nokia, Coffee Fellows, Wayne State University Medical, PetEvolution and Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies.

These customers are using Grounded vehicles for applications that include mobile medical and dental services, food service and various field operations.

The company’s growing customer base demonstrates the potential for modular vehicles to serve organizations with very different operational requirements. A mobile healthcare provider, for example, may need a vehicle configured around patient services and medical equipment, while a food-service business may require refrigeration, preparation areas or specialized storage.

Grounded’s modular approach is intended to make these different configurations possible without requiring the company to create an entirely new vehicle architecture for every customer.

This flexibility is becoming increasingly important as organizations evaluate fleet electrification while also seeking vehicles capable of performing specialized functions.

From Electric RV Startup to Fleet Technology Company

The manufacturing expansion marks another stage in Grounded’s evolution. The company initially became known for its modular electric recreational vehicles and direct-to-consumer products. While it will continue producing fully electric RVs, Grounded is increasingly focusing on commercial and government fleet customers.

This transition reflects the company’s broader vision of combining vehicle manufacturing with software and modular design.

Grounded’s vehicles are designed to incorporate connected software capabilities that can support remote monitoring and fleet management. These features can provide fleet operators with greater visibility into vehicle operations and potentially help them manage larger vehicle fleets more efficiently.

For commercial and government organizations considering electrification, the ability to combine electric powertrains with purpose-built vehicle configurations could provide an alternative to conventional fleet solutions.

At the same time, Grounded’s new box platform will support ICE vehicles, allowing the company to address fleet markets where full electrification may not yet be practical.

Detroit Facility Creates New Manufacturing Capacity

The decision to expand production in Detroit also reinforces the company’s connection to the city’s automotive and mobility ecosystem.

The new 50,000-square-foot facility will provide Grounded with substantially more space for manufacturing, engineering and other operational activities. The company expects production to begin at the new location in August 2026, with manufacturing capacity increasing throughout 2027.

The expanded facility is expected to support existing customer commitments, production of the new box platform and an expanding pipeline of enterprise and municipal fleet customers.

Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, highlighted Grounded’s growth from an early-stage company emerging from Newlab into a business requiring a much larger facility and additional employees.

The expansion is expected to add 15 new jobs, further contributing to Detroit’s growing mobility and advanced manufacturing ecosystem.

Grounded’s growth also reflects Detroit’s continuing role as a center for automotive innovation. The city has a long history in vehicle manufacturing, while a new generation of mobility companies is combining traditional manufacturing capabilities with software, electrification and advanced engineering.

Expanding Commercial Leadership

Alongside its manufacturing expansion, Grounded is strengthening its commercial leadership team. The company has appointed Drew Snow, formerly of Adrian Steel, as Director of International Sales.

Snow will focus on expanding Grounded’s fleet business and introducing its modular vehicle platform to customers in additional markets. His experience is expected to support the company’s efforts to develop relationships with enterprise and fleet customers as production scales.

Expanding the sales organization will be increasingly important as Grounded moves from serving a relatively focused customer base toward larger commercial and municipal markets.

The company expects its new production capabilities to provide the foundation for this expansion, enabling it to increase output while continuing to develop vehicles tailored to specific fleet applications.

Preparing for Long-Term Growth

Grounded’s $5 million seed financing, new manufacturing facility and box platform collectively represent a significant step in the company’s growth strategy. The combination of expanded production capacity, modular vehicle architecture and connected software technology positions the company to pursue a broader range of commercial mobility opportunities.

Production at the new Detroit facility is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with the company planning to ramp capacity through 2027. During this period, Grounded will focus on fulfilling existing commitments while bringing the new box platform to market and pursuing additional enterprise and municipal customers.

Founded by former SpaceX engineers, Grounded combines advanced manufacturing with mobility technology to develop modular vehicles for both commercial and recreational applications. The company focuses on vehicles that can be customized for different uses while incorporating connected software for remote monitoring and fleet management.

As businesses and public-sector organizations increasingly evaluate fleet modernization, Grounded aims to provide a flexible platform that can support a variety of applications and powertrain options.

The move into a 50,000-square-foot Detroit manufacturing facility signals that Grounded is entering a new phase defined by higher production volumes, broader commercial applications and an expanding customer base. With its new capital, expanded workforce and vehicle-agnostic box platform, the company is positioning itself to become a larger participant in the rapidly evolving advanced manufacturing and commercial mobility market.
