FLIR, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies, has launched the TrafiBot Dual AI multispectral camera system, designed to improve safety on interurban roads, particularly in tunnels and on bridges where drivers face the greatest risk from unseen objects or rapidly growing vehicle fires. This advanced traffic camera system features a high-speed thermal core, 14-bit early fire detection, and sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) for superior detection performance, ensuring reliable traffic data collection without compromising imaging resolution or bandwidth.
The TrafiBot Dual AI operates with three proprietary AI models developed from millions of FLIR-captured images worldwide. One model detects and classifies fallen objects, while the other two identify vehicles, including unusual objects like e-scooters, as well as vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, using both thermal and visual streams.
Equipped with FLIR’s patented 3D world tracker, the TrafiBot Dual AI enhances incident detection. It anticipates vehicle speed and trajectory as cars enter its field of view, even when objects become obscured. The camera also detects sudden lane changes and wrong-way drivers, helping traffic managers to address safety incidents effectively while reducing false alarms.
The camera’s early fire detection capabilities are groundbreaking. By analyzing 14-bit thermal data directly within the camera, TrafiBot Dual AI provides 64 times more information than previous models, leading to faster, more reliable fire detection while minimizing false alarms. This sets a new industry standard for fire detection in road tunnels.
“In the last decade, intelligent traffic management systems have advanced significantly, but today’s traffic teams need faster, more accurate data to quickly alert first responders, save lives, and restore traffic flow,” said Stefaan Pinck, Vice President of Business Development at FLIR. “The TrafiBot Dual AI combines advanced AI models with early fire detection to meet this need.”
Gil Marques, President of Tacel Ltd., one of Canada’s top suppliers of traffic management systems, praised FLIR’s approach, noting its decades of experience integrated into the AI algorithms. “Unlike competitors who rely on generic datasets, FLIR’s deep traffic intelligence is unmatched in the industry,” Marques said.
Flexible Installation and Robust Design
TrafiBot Dual AI features an innovative three-axis rotational design that allows for easy installation, even on sloped walls and within tight spaces. The camera swivels, pans, tilts, and rolls, eliminating the need for custom adapter plates and reducing installation time and traffic disruption. An internal tilt sensor automatically calibrates the camera, further streamlining the setup process.
Housed in an IP 66/67-rated stainless-steel casing, the TrafiBot Dual AI is built to withstand extreme weather conditions, including salt air, humidity, and high-pressure cleaning. It boasts a 4K optical zoom camera with a detection range of up to 300 meters (984 feet), offering greater coverage compared to previous models.
Seamless Software Integration
TrafiBot Dual AI is designed to integrate with FLIR Cascade, a new software that organizes data and provides intelligent incident filtering. The camera captures short, high-resolution video clips of detected incidents, which are flagged for immediate review by traffic management teams. It can also integrate with video management systems to provide live footage.
