Geely Auto Marks Strategic Entry into Indonesian Market with Launch of First All-Electric SUV
Geely Auto has officially announced its entry into Indonesia, unveiling the pre-sale of its flagship electric SUV, the Geely EX5. This bold move not only introduces Indonesian consumers to a cutting-edge electric vehicle but also sets the stage for a new era of sustainable transportation in the region. The Geely EX5 is more than a car—it’s a statement about the future of mobility, designed to showcase innovation, energy efficiency, and advanced technology.
The company also revealed plans for local manufacturing, solidifying its commitment to the Indonesian market. In partnership with PT Handal Indonesia Motor, a leading automotive firm in the country, Geely will establish production facilities in Bekasi, a prominent industrial hub. This strategic collaboration not only strengthens Geely’s foothold in All-Electric Indonesia but also propels its global expansion in right-hand drive (RHD) markets. The move represents a pivotal milestone in Geely’s international growth strategy.
“Indonesia represents an exciting new chapter for Geely,” said Evin Ye, Vice President of Geely Automobile International Corporation (GAIC). “We are committed to bringing Indonesian consumers cutting-edge technology and sustainable mobility solutions, All-Electric supported by an exceptional user experience.”
Building a Local Presence and Expanding in Right-Hand Drive Markets
Geely Auto has laid a solid foundation for its operations in Indonesia. Since establishing its local subsidiary in November 2024, the All-Electric company has partnered with six prominent local dealerships to strengthen its presence in the market. By creating strategic alliances, Geely aims to rapidly expand its reach and accessibility to Indonesian customers.
Over the next three years, Geely plans to establish a network of 100 sales and service outlets across Indonesia. This expansive network will ensure that Indonesian consumers have seamless access to Geely’s products, services, and after-sales support, ultimately enhancing their overall experience with the brand.
By focusing on localized operations, All-Electric Geely aims to deliver a world-class brand experience to Indonesian consumers. The company is determined to set new benchmarks in the right-hand drive markets while achieving sustainable and high-quality growth.
“It is wonderful to see Geely taking a significant step by introducing a brand-new model to the Indonesian market,” said Cahyo Purnomo, Investment Promotion Director at the All-Electric Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). “This move will not only benefit the local automotive industry but also contribute to the economy and offer better prices for our customers.”
Strengthening Indonesia’s Manufacturing Ecosystem
A key highlight of Geely’s entry into Indonesia is its partnership with PT Handal Indonesia Motor. Together, the two companies will work on developing the Bekasi Phase II manufacturing facility, which is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025.
By the third quarter of the same year, the All-Electric plant is expected to commence production of the Geely EX5, meeting Indonesia’s local production (TKDN) standards. The facility will integrate Geely’s advanced battery technology and cutting-edge assembly processes, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s transformation into an automotive manufacturing hub focused on electrification and smart manufacturing.
This new plant will also be Geely’s seventh overseas manufacturing facility, underscoring its commitment to global expansion. All-Electric Beyond producing the Geely EX5, the facility has a three-year roadmap to develop a diverse portfolio of vehicles. This includes SUVs, MPVs, and models featuring pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and conventional powertrains.
“The partnership with Handal underscores our long-term commitment to Indonesia,” said Victor Gao, CEO of Geely Auto Indonesia. “We All-Electric share a vision of driving innovation and advancing the local automotive sector. By combining our strengths in technology and manufacturing, we aim to set new benchmarks for Indonesia’s automotive industry.”
The Bekasi facility symbolizes more than just manufacturing—it’s a gateway for Geely to position itself as a leader in the right-hand drive markets. All-Electric This strategic expansion aligns with Indonesia’s vision of becoming a global player in the electric vehicle industry, supported by government policies promoting sustainable mobility.

Geely’s Global Momentum and Indonesia’s Strategic Role
Geely Auto’s success story is driven by its relentless pursuit of innovation and customer-centric strategies. In 2024, the company achieved record-breaking sales, delivering 2.17 million units worldwide. This figure includes 403,923 international sales, reflecting a 53% year-on-year increase, and 888,235 new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, which surged by 92% compared to the previous year.
Indonesia is poised to play a pivotal role in Geely’s global expansion strategy. As one of the fastest-growing automotive markets in Southeast Asia, Indonesia offers immense potential for electric vehicles, thanks to government incentives, growing environmental awareness, and increasing demand for modern transportation solutions.
With the Bekasi plant serving as a strategic hub, Geely is well-positioned to strengthen its presence in right-hand drive markets. The company’s focus on localized manufacturing, high-value product offerings, and an extensive service network ensures a competitive edge in this dynamic market.
