EU’s Updated Safety Regulation Boosts Bus Safety with Advanced Assistance Systems
The EU’s updated General Safety Regulation (GSR) mandates all newly registered buses to incorporate a range of driver assistance systems to enhance road safety. Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand buses not only meet but often exceed these requirements. Standard features now include Active Brake Assist 5/6, Preventive Brake Assist 2, Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist, enhancing the safety of city, intercity, and touring coaches.
Daimler Buses: Pioneering Safety Technology
“Safety is always a top priority at Daimler Buses,” says Till Oberwörder, CEO of Daimler Buses. The sixth edition of the Safety Coach boasts the most comprehensive array of safety and assistance systems yet. Key features include the upgraded Active Brake Assist 6, Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist. Additional systems such as Lane Assist, Attention Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, adaptive cruise control, Brake Assist, and a 360° camera system are also included. The Mercedes-Benz Tourismo Safety Coach offers the optional MirrorCam system for improved visibility and reduced fuel consumption.
Advanced Emergency Braking and Monitoring Systems
Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA 6) surpasses GSR standards by responding to pedestrians and cyclists up to 60 km/h. The system reacts to stationary vehicles and obstacles, providing emergency braking when necessary. Preventive Brake Assist 2, specifically for city buses, warns of obstacles and initiates partial braking if the driver does not respond.
Enhanced Side and Front Monitoring
Sideguard Assist 2, with its combination of radar sensors and a camera, provides 270-degree environment scanning, monitoring both sides of the vehicle. Frontguard Assist helps prevent accidents when moving off by detecting objects in front of the bus and issuing hazard warnings.
Traffic Sign Assist and Comprehensive Safety Features
Traffic Sign Assist compares vehicle speed with permissible limits, warning drivers of excessive speed. Other standard features now include Attention Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, and a reversing camera, ensuring comprehensive safety and monitoring for drivers and passengers.
Daimler Buses continues its tradition of leading in bus safety with these advanced systems, setting a high standard for the industry.
