In a significant milestone for the agriculture industry, Cronus Chemicals LLC has secured the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Construction and Air Permit for its ammonia production plant in Tuscola, Illinois. This achievement marks a major step forward for Project Cronus, strategically located in the heart of the U.S. Corn Belt.
The state-of-the-art facility is expected to make a substantial impact on both U.S. and global food supply chains. Utilizing proprietary UHDE – Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions technology, the plant will produce 950,000 short tons of ammonia annually. Its location, with access to three interstate gas pipelines, ensures a reliable supply of natural gas, enabling competitive pricing and efficient operations.
“We are thrilled to announce the receipt of the EPA Construction and Air Permit, a crucial milestone in our commitment to providing reliable, locally-produced ammonia,” said Erzin Atac, CEO of Cronus Chemicals. “Our plant, situated in the nation’s highest consumption region, will help address shortages and supply concerns for local farmers and industrial users.”
Melih Keyman, Chairman and majority shareholder of Cronus, echoed the sentiment: “Entering the U.S. market with a project like Cronus Chemicals presents a tremendous opportunity for our family and Keytrade AG. We are proud to bring jobs to the state of Illinois.”
The demand for ammonia continues to exceed supply in the U.S., with Illinois being the largest consumer of agricultural ammonia. Project Cronus, with its 950,000 short-ton annual production capacity, is poised to play a pivotal role in both national and global fertilizer markets.
Governor JB Pritzker also emphasized the importance of this development: “With its strategic location and cutting-edge technology, Cronus Chemicals is supporting our local farmers by producing ammonia, a more sustainable fertilizer. This project strengthens the agricultural sector in Central Illinois and contributes to innovation in sustainable fertilizer, aligning with Illinois’ greener future goals.”
Josh McElravy, President of Lincoln Land Building Trades Union, celebrated the progress: “We are excited to see Cronus Chemicals reach this milestone. Through the Project Labor Agreement with North America Building Trades Unions, we are committed to providing the skilled labor necessary to bring this important project to life.”
The Cronus Chemicals project is not only notable for its production capacity but also for its economic and environmental benefits. Expected to generate strong returns, the project will leverage the Corn Belt’s premium pricing for ammonia while offering faster, safer, and more cost-efficient deliveries compared to distant producers. The EPA Air Permit reflects Cronus Chemicals’ dedication to environmental sustainability, meeting rigorous regulatory standards and demonstrating a responsible approach to industrial development.
