Today marks the commencement of the 15th International Workshop on Advanced Materials (IWAM), organized by the Ras Al Khaimah Center for Advanced Materials (RAKCAM) at the Mövenpick Resort on Al Marjan Island.
This prestigious event brings together over 200 eminent scientists, professors, researchers, and students from renowned educational institutions worldwide, alongside more than 100 participants from universities in the UAE. They gather to explore the transformative potential of advanced materials in shaping the future. Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, the workshop features a fireside discussion highlighting the significance of advanced materials in addressing global challenges.
Advanced materials, encompassing metals, ceramics, and polymers, have revolutionized various industries, from electronics to healthcare, with their innovative properties and applications. They hold the promise of reducing carbon footprint and energy consumption across sectors like aerospace, transportation, construction, and healthcare.
Distinguished scientists from renowned institutions such as the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of New South Wales, and the Max Planck Institute, including Nobel Prize laureate Professor Andre Geim from the University of Manchester, are set to share insights and expertise.
In line with IWAM’s commitment to engaging young minds in scientific endeavors, over 500 students from schools and universities in Ras Al Khaimah have participated in the ‘Innovation and Sustainability Challenge.’ This initiative encourages them to devise innovative solutions to global issues. Additionally, winners of this challenge and the prestigious Sheikh Saud International Prize for Materials Science, offering a US$100,000 reward, will be announced during the event.
Sir Anthony Cheetham, Chairman of the Ras Al Khaimah Center for Advanced Materials, emphasized the pivotal role of education and scientific advancement in the vision of His Highness Sheikh Saud. IWAM serves as a catalyst for inspiring youth to contribute to building a sustainable future for Ras Al Khaimah and beyond, thereby shaping a promising trajectory for future generations.
