Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance Nigeria’s aviation sector. With Africa’s air-traffic growth projected to outpace the global average over the next 20 years, this partnership aims to position Nigeria as a key player in the continent’s aviation industry.
“We are pleased to enter this significant collaboration with Boeing, which will benefit Nigerian airlines and advance our nation’s civil aviation ecosystem,” stated Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo. “As Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, Nigeria is well-positioned to drive aviation growth in Africa. The support from this agreement will help our local operators thrive, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s priorities. We look forward to working closely with Boeing in the coming months and years to achieve this vision.”
Boeing will offer strategic planning workshops, training, technical support, and assessments to Nigerian airlines as part of its strategic relationship with the ministry. This collaboration is seen as a crucial step in building a sustainable civil aviation ecosystem in Nigeria, with both parties committed to innovation and progress.
“Nigeria holds significant potential to contribute to economic growth, connect people, and shape the future of aviation in Africa and beyond,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales for Africa.
According to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook, Africa will require 1,170 new airplanes over the next two decades. Boeing aircraft have been integral to Africa’s commercial fleet for over 75 years, with more than 60 airlines operating around 500 Boeing planes across the continent, representing nearly 70% of the market share in Africa.
