ChargePoint & GM Partner to Add 500 EV Fast Chargers

ChargePoint and General Motors (GM) have announced an ambitious collaboration to install up to 500 ultra-fast EV charging ports at key locations across the United States. Branded under GM Energy, these chargers aim to enhance accessibility for electric vehicle (EV) drivers and will be publicly available by the end of 2025.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to addressing critical barriers to EV adoption, including charging infrastructure availability and speed. The chargers will be strategically positioned to support long-distance travel and urban EV users, making it easier for drivers to find reliable and fast charging options.

Cutting-Edge Charging Technology

A highlight of the initiative is the integration of ChargePoint’s Omni Port system, a versatile technology designed to accommodate vehicles with either CCS or NACS charging ports. This innovation eliminates the need for adapters and ensures that parking spaces are not restricted to specific connector types. Omni Port’s flexibility simplifies the charging process, providing a universal solution for a wide range of EVs.

Additionally, many of the new charging stations will feature ChargePoint’s Express Plus platform. Known for its ultra-fast capabilities, the platform supports charging speeds of up to 500 kW, enabling EVs to gain significant range in just a few minutes. This level of performance aligns with the growing expectations of EV drivers for rapid and efficient charging experiences.

Leaders in EV Mobility

Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, emphasized the importance of collaborations like this in driving the shift toward electric mobility. “The transition to electric mobility continues to be driven by leaders such as General Motors offering innovative EVs and committing to make chargers as ubiquitous as possible,” Wilmer said. “Our collaboration with GM represents a significant investment in the infrastructure to enable fast and easy charging for all. Together, ChargePoint and GM will deliver a seamless fast charging experience via reliable charging hardware managed by our industry-leading software platform.”

Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy, highlighted how this partnership complements GM’s broader EV strategy. “Continuing to provide customers with better charging options helps to remove barriers to EV adoption and improve the ownership experience. Today, GM drivers have access to hundreds of thousands of places to charge, and we are proud that this collaboration with ChargePoint adds even more reliable, accessible, and convenient charging experiences,” Sheffer stated. “With ultra-fast charging, Omni Port technology, and excellent customer experiences, this collaboration should be another reason why EV drivers and the EV-curious should be excited.”

Supporting Charge Point Operators

In addition to deploying chargers, the collaboration includes an incentive program aimed at encouraging third-party charge point operators (CPOs) to invest in EV charging infrastructure. This program simplifies the process for CPOs to own and operate fast chargers, addressing financial and operational challenges associated with building and maintaining charging networks. By involving CPOs, the initiative ensures a scalable and sustainable expansion of charging infrastructure across the U.S.

Building a Nationwide Network

This partnership between ChargePoint and GM reflects a broader trend in the EV industry, where automakers and charging network providers are working together to bridge infrastructure gaps. By focusing on ultra-fast and universally compatible charging solutions, the collaboration not only benefits current EV owners but also makes the prospect of EV ownership more appealing to new buyers.

The rollout of 500 ultra-fast chargers is a significant milestone in the journey toward electrified transportation. With this initiative, ChargePoint and GM are taking a proactive approach to addressing the challenges associated with EV adoption while enhancing convenience and reliability for drivers.
