Cathay Pacific Expands Long-Haul Capabilities with Order for 14 Additional Boeing 777-9 Jets
Boeing and Cathay Pacific have announced a significant expansion of their long-standing partnership, with the Hong Kong-based airline placing an order for 14 additional Boeing 777-9 passenger aircraft. This latest commitment brings Cathay Pacific’s total order for the advanced twin-engine jets to 35, reinforcing the airline’s strategic vision to modernize its long-haul fleet and enhance its global operations.
The Boeing 777-9 is the latest and most technologically advanced aircraft in the 777 family. As the world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet, the 777-9 is engineered to deliver exceptional performance, reduced environmental impact, and an improved passenger experience. Compared to the aircraft it is set to replace, the 777-9 offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions, along with a 40% reduction in noise footprint—key features that align with Cathay Pacific’s ongoing sustainability initiatives and fleet modernization goals.
Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam emphasized the significance of the order in supporting the airline’s future growth and operational excellence. “We plan to expand and renew our fleet with the additional 777-9 aircraft, enabling us to continue our rich history of connecting the world with our Hong Kong hub,” Lam stated. “Cathay Pacific aims to further strengthen our ongoing partnership with Boeing and leverage the world-class features of the new 777-9 as we strive to become the world’s best premium airline.”
For over three decades, Cathay Pacific has relied on the Boeing 777 family to serve its growing network of international destinations. The introduction of the 777-9, which is set to become the airline’s new flagship aircraft, will allow Cathay to operate with increased efficiency while enhancing passenger and cargo capabilities, particularly on long- and ultra-long-haul routes.
Boeing also praised the deepening relationship with Cathay Pacific and underscored the importance of the 777-9 in meeting the evolving needs of global carriers. “We are proud to support Cathay Pacific’s continued leadership as one of the world’s top airlines and introduce the 777-9 as their future flagship airplane,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing. “This latest order demonstrates the value of the 777-9 and further strengthens the airline’s tradition of delivering superb comfort, convenience, and connectivity to passengers for years to come.”
The Boeing 777-9 offers a range of up to 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 kilometers), which will enable Cathay Pacific to operate non-stop services between Hong Kong and major long-haul destinations across North America, Europe, and beyond. This capability is particularly valuable as global air travel continues to rebound and airlines look to rebuild and expand their international networks.
The 777-9 is part of Boeing’s 777X program, which has garnered more than 550 orders from airlines around the world. Its development and production sustain thousands of high-skilled jobs at Boeing’s manufacturing facilities in Everett, Washington, and throughout its global supply chain. The aircraft incorporates advanced technologies, including new composite wings with folding wingtips, more efficient GE9X engines from GE Aerospace, and advanced aerodynamics—all contributing to its performance and sustainability advantages.
In a broader context, the order from Cathay Pacific underscores the recovery of the aviation industry and the renewed confidence among global carriers to invest in next-generation aircraft. As passenger demand grows and environmental concerns remain at the forefront, airlines are seeking new ways to balance operational expansion with emissions reduction and fuel efficiency.
As one of Asia’s most prominent carriers, Cathay Pacific’s decision to deepen its investment in the Boeing 777-9 also reflects its strategic focus on re-establishing Hong Kong as a premier global aviation hub. The airline has consistently aimed to deliver a premium experience to its customers, and the 777-9—with its larger cabin, wider seating configuration, and improved onboard features—will support those ambitions.
Boeing, for its part, continues to strengthen its role as a leading global aerospace manufacturer. As the top U.S. exporter, the company designs, builds, and supports commercial airplanes, defense systems, and space solutions for customers in over 150 countries. With a workforce and supply chain that span the globe, Boeing is deeply committed to innovation, sustainability, and community impact.
