Boeing-built X-37B Begins Advanced Space Maneuvering

The Boeing-built X-37B is preparing to conduct a series of advanced aerobraking maneuvers, transitioning from a Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO) where it has been operating since December 2023. This innovative technique will allow the spaceplane to lower its altitude while using minimal fuel. This marks the first collaborative attempt by Boeing, the United States Space Force (USSF), and the X-37B to demonstrate this novel capability.

Space is an expansive and challenging environment, making technology testing essential for future success,” stated Michelle Parker, vice president of Boeing’s Space Mission Systems. “No other space platform matches the X-37B in terms of capability, flexibility, and maneuverability. This upcoming demonstration will further establish this test vehicle as a leader in innovation.

During the aerobraking process, the X-37B will utilize the drag created by Earth’s atmosphere to decelerate, reducing the vehicle’s energy and altering its orbit with minimal fuel consumption. The disposal of the Service Module will adhere to established space debris mitigation standards, ensuring that the X-37B’s orbit change is conducted safely and responsibly. Following the aerobraking phase, the X-37B will continue its testing and experimentation objectives.

“This pioneering maneuver by the X-37B represents a significant milestone for the United States Space Force as we work to enhance our capabilities in this demanding domain,” commented Gen. Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations.

The program will build upon the success of six previous missions that demonstrated the safe operation of the X-37B around Earth. Boeing draws upon decades of experience gained from various spacecraft operations, including the Apollo missions, the Space Shuttle Program, and numerous government and commercial satellites.

With each mission, the X-37B continues to innovate and set new records.
