The mining industry in the Asia Pacific region has the potential to enhance sustainable water management practices, safeguarding freshwater resources for local communities while ensuring a resilient and reliable water future, according to Black & Veatch, a global leader in critical infrastructure solutions.
In Australia, for instance, the national science agency CSIRO reports that mining and other industries account for approximately 20 percent of the nation’s total water consumption.
“Effective and readily available water management solutions, such as desalination and water recycling, can be designed to enhance energy efficiency while lowering operational costs and carbon emissions in the Asia Pacific mining sector. This approach can help mitigate significant strategic risks,” stated Mick Scrivens, Vice President and Director for Australia Pacific at Black & Veatch. “Collaborating on these solutions will yield benefits for the environment, local communities, mining companies, and the industry as a whole.”
At the upcoming International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) 2024, Black & Veatch will host the only dedicated session on water management in the mining industry, scheduled for October 30.
Led by Scrivens and featuring industry leaders and Black & Veatch experts, this session will delve into how integrating water planning throughout the entire mine lifecycle can lead to improved sustainability outcomes. Discussions will also focus on targeted investments in appropriate technologies and the importance of involving key stakeholders during the planning and design stages of projects.
Black & Veatch leaders will participate in several sessions at IMARC 2024, including:
- “Where’s the Water Coming From? The Importance of Infrastructure Planning and Delivery”
Brady Hays, Senior Vice President and Executive Managing Director of Fuels and Natural Resources, will be interviewed by Corinne Cheeseman, CEO of the Australian Water Association. - “How to Sustainably Manage Water in Mining within Australia”
Garrick Field, Solutions Director for Industrial Water and Mining, will lead a panel featuring water leaders from BHP, Legacie, ICMM, and the Government of Western Australia. - “Getting Projects Out of the Ground and Off the Ground Faster”
Jonathan Dunham, Associate Vice President and Managing Director of Mining and Metals, will contribute to a panel discussion.
IMARC 2024 will take place from October 29 to 31 in Sydney.
