Aluminium Innovation: Rio Tinto Lauds Australia’s Commitment to Green Manufacturing

Rio Tinto Applauds Australian Government’s Backing for Low-Carbon Aluminium

Rio Tinto has warmly welcomed the Australian Government’s recent announcement of an aluminium production credit, a significant initiative designed to sustain and grow aluminium smelting operations across the nation. This strategic measure promises to not only bolster regional communities but also enhance Australia’s manufacturing capabilities, setting the stage for the country to emerge as a leader in green metals production.

A Bold Step Forward

The aluminium production credit, unveiled as part of the Future Made in Australia Plan, charts a promising path toward positioning Australia at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing. The credit will specifically provide targeted support to Australian aluminium smelters as they transition to reliable, renewable energy sources by 2036. Facilities benefiting from this initiative will receive support for their production over a 10-year period, fostering an environment conducive to investment, job creation, and the strengthening of the country’s world-class aluminium sector.

This support comes at a pivotal juncture for the industry. With global manufacturers and infrastructure developers increasingly prioritizing low-carbon materials, the demand for sustainably produced aluminium is on the rise. The Australian Government’s initiative not only addresses this growing demand but also underscores a commitment to a strong economic future for communities that have powered the nation’s aluminium industry for decades.

Rio Tinto’s Perspective

Kellie Parker, Rio Tinto’s Chief Executive for Australia, expressed enthusiasm about the government’s forward-looking approach. “The Australian Government’s commitment demonstrates strong confidence in domestic manufacturing and the nation’s role in the global economy,” Parker said. “As traditional energy sources for heavy industry become increasingly uncompetitive, today’s announcement is a critical piece in helping future-proof the industry. Such support is vital for sustaining and growing regional economies.”

Parker also emphasized the broader implications of this initiative. “As global industrial customers and consumers increasingly focus on low-carbon products, this support signals Australia’s potential to be a major supplier of the aluminium needed for the global energy transition. It creates a robust foundation for local businesses and manufacturing to thrive,” she added.

Building on Previous Milestones

This announcement builds on Rio Tinto’s recent efforts to advance renewable energy integration into its aluminium operations. In August 2024, Rio Tinto partnered with the Queensland Government to support Boyne Smelters Ltd (BSL) in its transition to renewable power. Furthermore, Rio Tinto has made significant progress in securing renewable energy for its operations, highlighted by the signing of Australia’s largest renewable power purchase agreement earlier in 2024. This agreement involves purchasing the majority of electricity generated by Windlab’s 1.4GW Bungaban wind energy project to supply the company’s Gladstone aluminium operations.

In addition, Rio Tinto entered into a landmark agreement with European Energy to drive the development of the 1.1GW Upper Calliope solar farm. Collectively, these projects will position Rio Tinto as the largest industrial buyer of renewable power in Australia, reinforcing the company’s leadership in the transition to sustainable energy.

Economic Impact and Employment

Rio Tinto’s aluminium production chain in Queensland serves as a cornerstone of the regional economy. The company’s operations directly employ over 4,500 individuals and support thousands more indirectly. In Gladstone alone, more than 3,000 jobs are tied to Rio Tinto’s aluminium operations, including 1,000 positions at BSL. Additionally, the company’s bauxite operations in Weipa provide employment for over 1,300 people, supplying essential raw materials to the Gladstone facilities.

The company’s involvement extends beyond Queensland. As a 51.55% owner of Tomago Aluminium Company, Rio Tinto has expressed optimism about the future of its operations in New South Wales. Located in the Hunter Valley, Tomago Aluminium is Australia’s largest aluminium smelter, directly supporting more than 1,200 full-time jobs. Rio Tinto is committed to collaborating with the New South Wales Government to ensure the long-term viability of this critical operation.

A Vision for the Future

The Australian Government’s aluminium production credit represents a visionary step toward addressing the twin challenges of economic sustainability and environmental responsibility. By incentivizing the transition to renewable energy and supporting domestic manufacturing, the initiative aligns with the global shift toward a low-carbon economy.

For Rio Tinto, the announcement reaffirms the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community engagement. By embracing renewable energy and fostering local manufacturing, Rio Tinto is not only enhancing its competitive edge but also contributing to Australia’s broader goals of economic growth and environmental stewardship.

As the world increasingly turns to low-carbon solutions, Australia’s aluminium industry stands at a crossroads. The government’s production credit offers a roadmap for navigating this transition, providing the support needed to modernize operations, secure jobs, and meet the demands of a changing global market. Rio Tinto’s proactive efforts and strong partnerships underscore the potential for a brighter, more sustainable future for the nation’s aluminium sector.

Through continued collaboration between government, industry, and local communities, Australia is well-positioned to lead the way in green metals manufacturing, ensuring lasting benefits for generations to come.
