Columbia Sportswear continues to push the boundaries of innovation by expanding its collaboration with space exploration company Intuitive Machines in preparation for a historic second lunar launch later this month. This groundbreaking partnership leverages Columbia’s cutting-edge technologies, including Omni-Heat™ Infinity and Omni-Shade™ Sun Deflector, to enhance the lander’s ability to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations in space and on the Moon’s surface. The IM-2 mission, targeting the Moon’s south pole, aims to drill into the lunar surface in search of ice—an unprecedented scientific endeavor in one of the most inhospitable environments known to humanity.

Building on the success of the IM-1 mission, which successfully incorporated Columbia’s Omni-Heat Infinity insulation, Columbia and Intuitive Machines have intensified their collaborative efforts to develop and test advanced thermal management materials. The IM-2 lander, Athena, will be equipped with both Omni-Heat Infinity and Omni-Shade Sun Deflector technologies, ensuring optimal protection against the Moon’s severe conditions. Omni-Heat Infinity’s heat-reflective insulation will safeguard critical components of the lander from the frigid lunar cold, while Omni-Shade Sun Deflector will help shield Athena from intense solar radiation, preventing overheating of essential onboard systems.

As Athena embarks on its mission, it will endure extreme heat exposure while conducting critical experiments on the lunar surface. Columbia’s Omni-Shade Sun Deflector, a patented technology engineered to reflect solar radiation, will be integrated into a specialized multilayer insulation (MLI) blanket that covers the lander’s top deck. This will help regulate internal temperatures by reflecting solar heat away from Athena’s batteries and avionics, ensuring continued operation under extreme conditions. On Earth, the same Omni-Shade Sun Deflector technology is utilized in Columbia’s warm-weather apparel, where its reflective titanium dioxide dots deflect solar rays, keeping wearers cooler in high-heat environments.

Columbia’s Omni-Heat Infinity technology will also play a critical role in protecting Athena’s helium tank, a component vital to the lander’s mission success. As Athena travels through space and operates on the Moon, the helium tank must endure temperature swings from approximately +250°F to -250°F. Omni-Heat Infinity’s award-winning insulation technology will help maintain the necessary thermal balance, safeguarding mission-critical resources and ensuring smooth operation throughout the mission.

Scheduled for launch no earlier than February 26, the IM-2 mission will lift off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
