Hyundai Innovation Center Singapore Marks First Anniversary with Chair Euisun Chung

Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) recently celebrated its first anniversary, marking a pivotal milestone in the Hyundai Motor Group’s (the Group) global innovation strategy. Executive Chair Euisun Chung led the commemoration, reflecting on the center’s achievements and emphasizing its crucial role in driving the Group’s future mobility vision.

A town hall held on December 12th brought together HMGICS employees and key executives, including Hyundai Motor President and CEO Jaehoon Chang, who will assume the role of Vice Chair on January 1st; Juncheul Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of Manufacturing for Hyundai Motor Group; Hyun Sung Park, CEO of HMGICS; and Alpesh Patel, Chief Innovation Officer of HMGICS. The event served as an opportunity to highlight HMGICS’ progress, share strategic goals, and foster a shared vision for the future.

“Our journey has been impressive so far, but the best is yet to come,” said Executive Chair Chung, acknowledging the dedication of the HMGICS team. “We can meet the challenges ahead because we are Hyundai. We have what it takes—the right people like you and our vision of progress for humanity.” Chung reinforced the Group’s mission to develop sustainable mobility solutions and redefine the customer experience, stating, “HMGICS is exploring new business ideas and technologies that will revolutionize future mobility.”

President and CEO Jaehoon Chang underscored HMGICS’ role in the Group’s long-term strategy, particularly in advancing smart manufacturing technologies. “We will proactively develop essential technologies for future factories, such as AI, robotics, and automation, and verify their effectiveness through concrete projects. The expertise gained will become key assets for building smart factories globally,” he stated.

A Year of Innovation and Progress

HMGICS, Hyundai Motor Group’s first global innovation hub for future mobility, has taken significant strides over the past year in manufacturing technology, research and development (R&D), and customer engagement. The center has demonstrated its capability to lead advancements in multiple areas, laying the foundation for future mobility solutions.

Among its achievements, HMGICS has implemented an advanced cell-based production system powered by robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital twin technology. This highly intelligent and automated system has enhanced logistics and assembly automation, paving the way for producing various mobility solutions, including electric vehicles (EVs), Purpose-Built Vehicles (PBVs), Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), and robotics.

These innovations will be scaled and applied to Hyundai Motor Group’s factories worldwide, such as the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia and the dedicated EV plant in Ulsan. These forward-looking factories are designed to improve operational efficiency, employee safety, and convenience, ultimately boosting the Group’s manufacturing competitiveness.

In 2023, HMGICS celebrated the production of the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Singapore’s first locally assembled EV, and is preparing for the 2024 launch of the Hyundai IONIQ 6. Both models have garnered global acclaim for their cutting-edge technology, design, and sustainable manufacturing processes, further solidifying HMGICS’ reputation as a hub for innovation.

Redefining Customer Experience

Beyond manufacturing, HMGICS has revolutionized customer engagement through immersive experiences. The center offers Discovery Tours, where visitors can explore the EV production process via 3D virtual reality, enjoy test rides on the Skytrack, and visit the site’s two-story vertical smart farm. These initiatives provide a holistic view of Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The smart farm within HMGICS supplies fresh produce to Na Oh, a unique Korean restaurant on-site that embodies a “seed-to-table” concept. Opened in June and led by three-Michelin-starred Chef Corey Lee, the restaurant combines culinary excellence with sustainability, offering a cultural and sensory experience that enhances the overall customer journey.

Building Community and Talent

HMGICS is also deeply committed to fostering local talent and collaborating with research institutions and universities. In 2024, the center expanded its local workforce by 30%, focusing on roles in R&D and advanced engineering. Partnerships with local institutions provide internships and hands-on learning opportunities, nurturing the next generation of professionals in cutting-edge manufacturing and innovative technologies.

The Road Ahead

As the Group continues to innovate, HMGICS remains at the forefront of Hyundai Motor Group’s transformative journey. The center’s efforts align with the Group’s mission to create meaningful social value and sustainable growth through technological advancements. With a vision for continuous transformation, HMGICS is set to play a central role in shaping a future where businesses and society thrive together.
