Aircalin Announces Order for the A350

Aircalin, the international airline of New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific, has announced a significant step in its fleet modernization and expansion strategy by placing an order with Airbus for two long-range A350-900 aircraft. This development marks a milestone in Aircalin’s commitment to enhancing its long-haul operations and adapting its fleet to meet growing demands for international travel.

The A350-900s are set to play a pivotal role in Aircalin’s fleet transformation, complementing its existing widebody fleet of two A330neo aircraft. The airline plans to configure the new A350s in a premium three-class layout capable of accommodating over 320 passengers. This configuration will feature an expanded business class, offering greater comfort and luxury for long-haul travelers, and an overall capacity increase of 15% compared to the A330neo.

Aircalin’s CEO, Georges Selefen, expressed his enthusiasm for the new aircraft, stating, “As a continuation of our long-standing partnership with Airbus, we have selected the A350-900 to join our fleet in the coming years. These aircraft are essential for operating our recently inaugurated Nouméa-Paris route via Bangkok. They will open the doors to very long-haul flights and enable Aircalin to pursue its development strategy.” Selefen emphasized that the addition of the A350-900 would enhance Aircalin’s ability to connect New Caledonia with more destinations worldwide while maintaining a high standard of service and operational efficiency.

Benoit de Saint-Exupery, Executive Vice President of Sales for Airbus’ Commercial Aircraft business, lauded Aircalin’s decision, saying, “We are pleased with Aircalin’s decision to add the A350 to its fleet. This will allow Aircalin to further develop its potential and open up more long-haul routes. The order is yet another endorsement of the A350 as the undisputed long-range leader, bringing fuel-efficient service on some of the world’s longest networks, while offering passengers the highest levels of comfort.”

The Airbus A350 is widely regarded as the most advanced and efficient widebody aircraft in its class, which accommodates between 300 and 410 passengers. Its cutting-edge design incorporates state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics, ensuring exceptional performance and passenger comfort. Equipped with new-generation engines and an extensive use of lightweight materials, the A350 delivers a 25% improvement in fuel burn, operating costs, and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft.

Another key feature of the A350 is its compatibility with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Currently, the aircraft can operate with up to 50% SAF, and Airbus is targeting full SAF capability across its fleet by 2030. This underscores the A350’s role in promoting sustainability and reducing the aviation industry’s environmental footprint.

Aircalin’s choice of the A350-900 aligns with its strategic goals to enhance connectivity and support New Caledonia’s economic and tourism development. The aircraft’s range and fuel efficiency make it an ideal choice for ultra-long-haul routes, including the newly launched Nouméa-Paris service via Bangkok. With this addition, Aircalin aims to strengthen its position in the competitive international aviation market and offer passengers a superior travel experience.

The A350’s advanced cabin design also prioritizes passenger comfort. Features such as optimized cabin pressure, better humidity levels, and quieter interiors contribute to a more pleasant and restful journey. These attributes are expected to resonate strongly with travelers, particularly on long-haul flights.

As of the end of November 2024, Airbus has secured over 1,300 orders for the A350 from 61 customers worldwide, reinforcing its reputation as a leading choice for airlines seeking to balance efficiency, range, and passenger comfort. Aircalin’s order further underscores the aircraft’s appeal and its role in shaping the future of air travel.

The introduction of the A350-900 will enable Aircalin to better serve its mission of connecting New Caledonia to the world while supporting sustainable aviation practices. As the airline looks ahead to the arrival of these state-of-the-art aircraft, it remains committed to delivering enhanced service quality, operational excellence, and a greener future for air travel.
