Onsemi Hyperlux Sensors Selected for Subaru’s Next-Gen AI-Powered EyeSight System

onsemi has been selected as the primary supplier of image sensors for Subaru’s next-generation EyeSight stereo-camera front sensing system in future vehicle models. The advanced Hyperlux AR0823AT image sensor from onsemi will serve as the “eyes” of the system, designed to capture crucial visual data that powers Subaru’s AI-enabled stereo-camera algorithm. This will enable the vehicle to make more precise driving decisions, ultimately enhancing safety.

“Capturing accurate and reliable visual data is vital for AI-driven driver assistance systems and plays a crucial role in improving vehicle safety,” said Hassane El-Khoury, president and CEO of onsemi. “By combining high-performance imaging with compliance to critical safety standards, onsemi’s Hyperlux image sensors will empower Subaru’s next-generation EyeSight system to interpret the driving environment and make precise decisions.”

The Hyperlux AR0823AT features a unique whole pixel design, allowing it to capture clear images under varying lighting conditions. It includes special synchronization controls to ensure the two sensors in the EyeSight stereo-camera system capture images simultaneously. This synchronization is key for stereo vision systems that replicate human vision, enabling the system to detect depth and accurately assess the size and distance of objects in the vehicle’s path. Additionally, the sensor’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) ensures both brightly lit and shadowed areas are captured in detail, helping the AI system make informed decisions.

“Subaru is committed to achieving our goal of ‘zero fatal road accidents by 2030,'” said Eiji Shibata, executive officer and chief digital car officer at Subaru Corporation. “We regard onsemi, a leader in automotive image sensing technology, as a partner who shares our commitment to safety. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration to enhance the performance of our next-gen AI-integrated EyeSight system through advanced image sensors like the AR0823AT.”

The Hyperlux AR0823AT also features functional safety capabilities that meet Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) C standards, ensuring the safety and reliability of the driver assistance system. These features continuously monitor the sensor’s performance, and if an issue arises that could affect the system’s accuracy, they can trigger actions such as resetting the camera or alerting the driver.

Zero fatal road accidents include fatalities involving Subaru vehicle occupants as well as pedestrians, cyclists, and others involved in collisions with Subaru vehicles.
