Ethiopian Airlines Receives Africa’s First Airbus A350-1000

Ethiopia’s national flag carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, and Africa’s largest Airbus operator has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000 from Airbus in Toulouse, France. This is the first A350-1000 to be operated by an African airline, enabling Ethiopian Airlines to elevate its premium service on key routes, including Washington D.C., London, Paris, and Frankfurt.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates a fleet of 21 A350 aircraft. The fleet will grow further with 14 additional A350s on the way, comprising 11 A350-900s and three more A350-1000s. The A350-1000 offers operational commonality with the A350-900, simplifying pilot training, maintenance, and integration processes.

With a total capacity of 395 seats, the A350-1000 will boost Ethiopian Airlines’ passenger capacity and deliver an enhanced travel experience, featuring the airline’s largest business class cabin. The introduction of Airbus’ new HBCplus satcom connectivity will provide passengers with seamless, high-speed internet from gate to gate.

The A350 is recognized as the world’s most advanced and efficient widebody aircraft, excelling in the 300-410 seat category. Its cutting-edge design and state-of-the-art aerodynamics ensure superior efficiency and comfort. The Airspace cabin of the A350, the quietest among twin-aisle aircraft, reduces noise by 50% compared to older models, offering passengers a peaceful and modern in-flight experience. Additionally, new-generation engines and lightweight materials make the A350 highly fuel-efficient.

Furthermore, the A350 is already capable of flying with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF capability by 2030. As of the end of September 2024, Airbus had secured 1,340 orders for the A350 from 60 customers globally, underscoring its status as one of the most successful widebody aircraft.
