Maxell Pioneering All-Solid-State Battery Development by 2027

Maxell has announced its new medium-term management plan, “MEX26” (Maximum Excellence 2026), which focuses on fast-tracking the development of all-solid-state batteries as a central component of its new business strategy. Established in 1961 as a manufacturer of batteries and magnetic tape, Maxell, whose name originates from “Maximum Capacity Dry Cell,” has evolved into a well-respected company known for high-quality electronic products and its commitment to societal contributions through innovative technologies. Among its notable advancements are the unique Analog Core Technologies, which encompass mixing and dispersion, fine coating, and high-precision molding and forming, driving innovation across various sectors.

MEX26 is an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing profitability and capital efficiency while pursuing sales and profit growth through strategic investments in promising sectors.

In June 2023, Maxell achieved a significant milestone by commencing mass production of the world’s first small-sized sulfide-based all-solid-state battery. The company is now exploring the possibility of mass-producing a medium-sized all-solid-state battery by the end of fiscal 2027. These all-solid-state batteries not only boast impressive reliability—with a lifespan of up to 20 years—but also excel in extreme temperature conditions without the risk of leakage. By commercializing these high-capacity, medium-sized batteries, Maxell aims to contribute to a sustainable future, providing permanent power sources tailored for diverse applications, including sensing and monitoring in harsh environments and automotive devices. The company targets sales of approximately 30 billion yen from its all-solid-state battery division by fiscal 2030, with plans for ongoing investments in the development of next-generation technologies and the commercialization of medium-sized all-solid-state batteries.

Maxell is determined to be recognized as an essential partner by stakeholders through the acceleration of technological advancements in key areas, positioning itself as a leader in the industry.

Overview of MEX26
Maxell will enhance its product offerings in three strategic focus areas: “Mobility,” “ICT/AI,” and “Human/Social Infrastructure.” Growth opportunities within these sectors include heat-resistant coin-type lithium batteries, coated separators, and primary batteries designed for medical devices. Additionally, Maxell plans to bolster its technical sales team to strengthen relationships with global customers across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
